This position provides administrative support for the Palmer Area Sport Fish Office and is the primary contact for customers with sport fish related business. Administrative functions include compiling and completing state forms related to employees returning from seasonal leave, hiring, mileage reimbursement, travel, and purchases made by numerous permanent and seasonal staff. Accounting duties include tracking audit trails and ledger balances and assisting with budget request preparation and midyear preaudits. This position is part of a front counter customer service team in a very busy field office. General duties include issuing fishing and hunting licenses, proxies, and a variety of fishing and hunting permits and fielding questions and assisting the public with information regarding areas and times open to sport and personal use fishing, hunting and trapping, bag and possession limits, permissible methods and means and a multitude of special regulations governing the management of fish and wildlife resources in the Northern Cook Inlet and West Cook Inlet areas.

The Palmer Area Office conducts Chinook and coho salmon stock assessments projects that assist management biologists with in-season abundance estimates used to manage local fisheries. Administrative support is vital to the success of these projects. Greeting customers and providing accurate answers to their questions is key to maintaining a well functioning office and satisfied customers.

Your working environment:
This position is located in Palmer, AK, across from the State Fair grounds. The daily work environment is a professional office setting working closely with 1-3 other front desk staff, although this position has dedicated office space to conduct administrative duties. This position will occasionally require long durations of standing and frequent interaction with the general public and area staff. Occasionally this position may take in biological specimens from fish and wildlife carcasses brought in by the public.
Who we are looking for:
- Proven ability to handle administrative tasks such as working with budgets, personnel paperwork, and purchasing documents.
- Experience with recent versions of Microsoft Word and Excel, as this position requires some editing of Emergency Orders, memorandums, various publications/handouts, and spreadsheets.
- An excellent, established customer service ethic and ability to act in a professional manner, even during challenging situations and knowledge of and experience with area and regional sport fishing and hunting/trapping regulations.
- An ability to deal with the occasional irate or belligerent customer who may be upset about fish and wildlife issues.
- Proven, excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to comprehend complex regulations or policies and procedures, and then communicating them to the public.
This position may be in possession of, or have access to, firearms/ammunition.
Minimum Qualifications
Two years of office clerical experience or technical experience related to fish, wildlife or habitat resources;
OR
One year of experience providing advanced clerical services based on established procedures, precedents, and policies in administrative, informative, and/or programmatic functions. This experience includes work such as an Office Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.
Substitution:
Postsecondary education from an accredited college may substitute for the required experience (3 semester or 4 quarter hours equal one month of experience).
