What We're Looking For

Barge Design Solutions is currently seeking to fill the position of Fire Protection Engineer in the Facilities Business Unit in our Knoxville, TN office. This position will help to develop and lead full-service fire protection consulting projects for both our private and public sector clients including commercial, institutional and federal facilities.

Responsibilities for this position include:

  • Responsible for the design & day-to-day guidance of the design of fire protection and life safety systems including: water based fire pumps, tanks, distribution/hydrants, wet pipe, dry pipe, standpipe, fire alarm, and life safety systems.
  • Collaborates with architects, engineers and other clients on building/fire code & standards consulting
  • Identifies various hazards, mitigation techniques and recommended solutions, materials, and equipment on Fire Protection/Life Safety consulting
  • Identifies and supports business development, client expansion and proposal development activities for our Fire Protection Engineering & Life Safety business
  • Brings significant technical design expertise, engaged in the identification of design considerations and potential issues, participates in the research and development of solutions to engineering and other technical challenges, and is involved in the production or validation of the work applied to those solutions.
  • Supports Project Managers as a technical leader on large complex projects.
  • Reviews complete project documents for conformity and quality assurance
  • Assists leadership and staff as a technical adviser
  • Leads complex technical portions of meetings with clients.
  • Develops strong relationships with clients, customers, officials, contractors, and others.
  • Performs other duties as requested

Education/Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering from an accredited university, or equivalent engineering education and technical training.
  • Professional Fire Protection Engineer (PE) license.
  • Between 5-10 years of experience in the evaluation/design of fire protection systems or building and fire code consultation, experience in consulting industry, preferred.
  • An interest in coaching and mentoring to technically strengthen the team capabilities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities to work both within a team and independently.
  • Familiarity with the International Fire Code, NFPA Standards, and United Facilities Criteria.
  • Experience with design for low-rise and high-rise commercial buildings, Department of Defense facilities, Hangars with high-expansion foam systems, a plus.
  • Experience mentoring early-career engineers and EITs, a plus.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret job-related manuals and documents.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience using hydraulic analysis software
  • Strong interpersonal/communication skills
  • Willing and able to travel to project sites and client meetings as needed.
