Job Description

We are seeking experienced Electric Power Generation Field Service Technicians based at our Jackson, Hattiesburg and Gulfport locations. The Electric Power Field Service Technician is responsible for field service support of Caterpillar diesel and natural gas electric power generation and petroleum engine product lines. Duties will include the maintenance, inspections, load banking, troubleshooting and repair of engine and electrical related systems, commissioning of engines/generators and coordination, maintenance and/or commissioning of transfer switch and switchgear systems.

The Field Service Technician-Electric Power Generation is responsible for the troubleshooting/diagnostics, repair/overhaul, and preventive maintenance of Caterpillar and allied electric power generation products (generators, switch gear systems) primarily during service calls at customer locations, using a field service truck in a safe, timely, efficient, and courteous manner. This position will require working hours in addition to the normal work schedule and for emergency calls.

Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities:

  • Perform maintenance, inspections, load banking, troubleshooting and repair of engine and electrical related systems, commissioning of engines/generators and coordination, maintenance and/or commissioning of transfer switch and switchgear systems in accordance with all prescribed quality and safety standards.
  • Troubleshoot, problem solve, and identify the problem through failure analysis.
  • Test, measure, align and adjust engine systems and components.
  • Research and determine re-usability of parts in accordance with published manufacturer guidelines.
  • Coordinate the ordering of replacement parts with supervisor.
  • Prepare and submit detailed, complete and legible service reports of all inspection and repairs performed using prescribed forms and procedures in a timely manner.
  • Keep supervisor regularly apprised of status of assigned repair jobs and assist in addressing customer questions and concerns.
  • Provide technical guidance, assistance, and training to internal technicians and customers as requested.
  • Troubleshoot field service delivery-related problems (weather, traffic, breakdowns) to resolution in real time.
  • Maintain all motor vehicle logs, documentation, and driving standards as may be required by the Department of Transportation (DOT), federal/state authorities, and the company.
  • Inspect all assigned vehicle and equipment daily and report repair and/or maintenance requests to designated manager. Maintain assigned vehicle in a clean and fueled state of readiness.
  • Maintain a professional and proper personal appearance at all times.
  • Keep up to date with developments in tooling, technologies and systems.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Diesel engine, construction equipment and/or truck engine training and certifications through accredited technical schools or relevant military experience preferred.
  • Minimum 4 to 6 years previous hands-on work experience as a diesel technician repairing Caterpillar or competitor spark ignited engines, electrical switch gear, and diesel/electric systems related components. Minimum 3 years related technician experience in a field service setting required.
  • Ability to read and comprehend moderately difficult computer-based schematics, specifications, service and parts literature, technical bulletins, safety manuals, and other related publications.
  • Solid mechanical systems knowledge of diesel engines/engine failures and electrical and hydraulic systems.
  • Proficient in the use of mechanical test equipment including CAT ET, PL1000 interface, and EMCP programming.
  • Ability to safely use material handling equipment and tooling and wear company required PPE (protective eyewear, gloves, harnesses, footwear) during a shift assignment that could last between 8 and 11 hours.
  • Current Class D motor vehicle license, DOT medical certification, and other related licenses as required by the Department of Transportation, federal, and/or state statutes.
  • Must have and maintain a driving record (MVR) which adheres to the company’s motor vehicle policy standards.
  • Good knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures within the transportation industry, including DOT regulations.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Good problem solving skills, detail oriented, and ability to work with a high level of accuracy.
  • Good computer skills using related information system applications (ex: SIS, DBS).
  • Ability to perform duties with a sense of urgency, exceeding customer expectations.
  • Ability to work independently in a dynamic fast paced field service environment.
  • Ability to work standard five-day work schedule, including daily overtime, and weekend hours as necessary.
  • Possess a complete set of basic mechanic hand tools including drives, sockets, and wrenches.
