General Information The Shenandoah Valley Migrant Education Program (SVMEP) at the Institute for Innovation in Health and Human Services (IIHHS) at James Madison University is a year round program serving children from migrant families who come into the Shenandoah Valley to do qualifying work, which includes processing poultry, picking apples, weeding and watering seedlings and milking dairy cows. The SVMEP offers year-round supplemental instructional services for preschool and school-aged eligible students as well as young adults under the age of twenty-two, targeting the students who are most at risk due to their high mobility and/or limited proficiency in English (identified as priority for service). The primary goal of the Migrant Education Program (MEP) is to ensure that all migrant students reach challenging academic standards and graduate with a high school diploma or complete a GED that prepares them for responsible citizenship, further learning and productive employment.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support JMU’s and IIHHS’ mission and vision to provide outreach programs to the community and provide quality experiential learning opportunities to JMU students.
  • Implement the Shenandoah Valley Migrant Education Program (SVMEP) in Harrisonburg, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Winchester, Frederick, Fauquier, Prince William and Clark for qualifying children.
  • Understand all federal regulations pertaining to the Migrant Education program.
  • Oversee a caseload of program participants who qualify for services, this includes:
    • supporting the student’s academic goals
    • providing transportation and interpretation when needed
    • connecting participants with health care and social services
    • connecting participants to nutritional resources and food pantries
    • provide mentorship for high school aged participants and older clients
    • communicate with school teachers, administration and home school liaisons to support the academic achievement of the student
  • Collaborate with the SVMEP team to support Parent Advisory Council meetings twice yearly.
  • Collaborate with the Migrant Education team to support summer enrichment program in June, July and August each year.

Qualifications
  • Fluency in Spanish and English required (oral and written). Final candidate will be required to demonstrate fluency in both.
  • Knowledge of available local services is preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with children, youth, adults, agency professionals, school staff and community members.
  • Knowledge of the public school systems is preferred.
