The Power Systems Field Service Technician is responsible for diagnosing, troubleshooting, repairing, and performing maintenance on Caterpillar and other OEM engines, gensets, and related equipment at the customer’s site a manner the reflects the company’s vision of working as “One Professional Team.” Depending on education and experience, the Power Systems Field Service Technician my perform all or some of the Essential Functions listed below with or without direct supervision.

Essential Functions:

  • Prepares and submits accurate and complete service reports daily
  • Prepares and completes all related inspection forms for repairs, maintenance, warranty, and startup documents for new equipment
  • Prepares and completes all related PM inspection forms and generator packages-startup documents
  • Accurately completes and submits time cards, vacation requests, and Purchasing Card receipts to Service Coordinators in a timely manner
  • Charges time to appropriate work order and segment and turns in parts credits, core credits, fluid samples, and receives signed documents for warranty parts and core returns from proper warehouse personnel
  • Uses Caterpillar’s Service Information System (SIS), Technical Marketing Information (TMI), Dealer Business Systems (DBS), Microsoft Outlook (email), laptop, com adapters, and tooling properly
  • Keeps and maintains all information in an orderly fashion while on a job, and utilizes current processes and forms to retain and track information
  • Communicates effectively with customers, manager, Service Coordinators, and Field Service Technicians verbally and in writing to ensure all repairs are completed correctly and in a timely manner
  • Correctly informs service clerk, service coordinator, or management of changes in scope of work and charges to work in appropriate work order segments and advises coordinator when leaving job site if other work is required
  • Promotes additional corrective repair and service to the customers as needed
  • Diagnoses and troubleshoot diesel and gas engines, generators, air compressors, and related equipment
  • Perform corrective repairs and scheduled maintenance on customer’s equipment
  • Analyzes customer repair and maintenance requirements on engine and generator or ATS
  • Performs work accurately within close proximity of estimated amount, Customer Service Agreement (CSA), or others with no rework
  • Keeps up to date with developments in tooling, technologies, and new equipment
  • Working knowledge of generator control panels, automatic transfer switches, synchronize and parallel operation, REDCO gauge-EMCP4, ASCO-MX150, and ISO
  • Generator and voltage regulators, brushless SR4-LC, tray-CDVR
  • In-depth knowledge of Cat gas engines, legacy stoichiometric through National Service Performance Standard (NSPS) to include air/fuel ratio control to meet local regulatory requirements, G3300-G3600
  • Understands and properly repairs Caterpillar electronic engine control systems
  • Familiarity with Cat diesel engines to include legacy mechanical through Tier 4 electronic engines to include exhaust after treatment and Perkins through C175
  • Highly proficient using SIS, TMI, Power Net, GERP
  • Uses safe working practices and follows all company safety requirements
  • Maintains a clean and organized work area
  • Performs routine maintenance on Caterpillar and other OEM’s equipment both diesel and gas engines
  • Makes recommendations for repairs both warrantable and non-warrantable
  • Makes parts replacement decisions based on reusability guidelines
  • Understands Caterpillar electronic engine control systems and properly troubleshoot and repair these systems
  • Proper use of Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) and Service Information System (SIS) to request correct parts, diagnose, and repair equipment with minimal supervision
  • Performs work in a safe and professional manner, keeps truck, tooling, customer site, and work area clean when departing
  • Actively participates in the Wagner safety culture to include completing job safety assessments, near miss reporting, and all safety trainings
  • Completes appropriate Caterpillar online training for appropriate area of responsibility
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned by manager

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Graduation from an accredited technical school specialized in diesel engine or generator repair and maintenance preferred
  • Experience working on generators, electrical systems, engine tear down and rebuilds, and complete system repair preferred
  • Minimum of 1 year administrative/clerical experience
  • Minimum of 3 years customer service experience
  • 1-3 years sales experience preferred
  • 1-3 years supervisory experience preferred

Additional Eligibility Requirements:

  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License
  • Valid DOT Health Card
  • MSHA License
  • Must pass all required pre-employment screenings which may include but are not limited to background checks, drug/alcohol testing, fit for duty testing, and any other job-related tests/screenings

Pay Range: $17.50 - $47.00 per hour

Pay rate is dependent on education and experience
