POSITION TITLE: ESL Itinerant Teacher
REPORTS TO: Department of Student Services
Education: Valid Ohio Department of Education teaching license with a TESOL Endorsement (preK – 12th grade). Content area certification (math, science, social studies) preferred.
Experience: Previous three to five years experience serving English Learners, including SLIFE, EL students with disabilities and gifted, as a teacher, or in a teacher related position preferably in a middle/high school public educational setting
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collaborates with classroom teachers and other staff to support implementation of district curriculum and classroom activities appropriate for ELs within various content areas;
- Assists in the administration of EL students’ English language proficiency tests (i.e. OELPA) and other assessment tools to monitor students’ progress.
- Analyzes multiple sources of data to select and implement appropriate English language development (ELD) interventions
- Create and support the implementation of Limited English Proficiency (LEP) Accommodation plans to address the unique needs of the EL students assigned.
- Continuously monitors EL and former EL students’ progress to ensure appropriate services and supports are provided for them within required timelines
- Design and implement meaningful family/parent involvement activities that include families as equal partners
- Carries out necessary compliance procedures and maintains required compliance documentation.
- Other duties as assigned by ESL Manager/Principal or his/her designee
Essential Functions/ Skills and Knowledge:
Skills
Will work cooperatively with regular classroom teachers, administrators, and other staff across various locations assisting in classroom intervention strategies, modifying general education curricula as necessary, and assisting EL students’ access of the general education curriculum
Will communicate regularly with families/parents and professional staff regarding the educational, social, cultural, and linguistic needs of EL students.
Will participate in professional growth activities through staff development, in service, workshops, and higher education.
Will use data to plan instruction and evaluate student progress
Will have the ability to give directions to and assist in supervision of paraprofessionals
Will be skilled at collaborating with general education teachers and other school team members at various locations
Will have the ability to create schedules
Will have the ability to implement the Ohio English Language Proficiency Standards
Knowledge
Knowledge and experience with research based best practices in English Language Development and the SIOP Model
Knowledge and experience with research-based culturally and linguistically appropriate instructional practices
Knowledge of Ohio English Language Proficiency Standards
Knowledge of federal and state legislation pertaining to EL students.
Knowledge of how to administer English language proficiency assessments, such as the OELPA (Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment).
Strong oral and written communication skills
Additional Skills
- Identify, procure and coordinate appropriate supplemental services to monitor progress of the English learners in the regular education classroom.
- Inservice regular classroom teachers and counselors as to best practices.
- Select and develop English language Development instructional materials and resources based upon the ELP standards
- Assist in the modification of the classroom environment for ELs in the regular classroom.
- Maintain accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulation. File required reports in complete and timely fashion.
- Collaborate with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, methods and developing graded courses of study.
- Establish and maintain cooperative relations with EL families/parents.
- Provide for his/her own professional growth by establishing and working toward yearly, measurable, self-devised goals and by an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences and/or advanced course work at institutions of higher learning.
- Proficiency in Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing a language other than English is welcome and encouraged.
CONTRACT PROVISIONS
Contract Provisions: 191 days Limited Contract
Salary: Certificated Classroom Teacher per Cincinnati Federation of Teachers (CFT) agreement
