In order to protect our employees and continue to provide safe and reliable service to our communities, as of November 14, 2021 we are requiring all new MTA hires to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to their start date. Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Senior Equipment Maintainer, with broad latitude for independent judgment and initiative, the Equipment Maintainer performs preventive maintenance, repair, rebuilding and/or replacement work on self-propelled special equipment such as tampers, track aligners and cranes, as well as on heavy, medium, light gasoline and diesel powered vehicles. Equipment Maintainers are responsible also for the repair and maintenance of special equipment and tools such as snow blowers, stationary and portable power generators, welding units, grinders, cutters, hand-held tampers, track drills and the like. Where replacement parts are no longer available, Equipment Maintainers may assist the Senior Equipment Maintainer in the design and fabrication of parts. From time to time, on a regularly recurring basis, Operating Authority Equipment Maintainers are required to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair New York City Transit Authority vehicles, the repair or maintenance of which is beyond the technical abilities of N.Y.C. Transit Authority vehicle maintainers.

Although the greater part of the Equipment Maintainer’s work is performed at the NRS Shop, they are required, on a 24-hour basis, to visit field sites for the repair or adjustment of equipment, vehicles, and special tools. Additionally, they are similarly required to report to sites on streets and thoroughfares where Authority vehicles may have become inoperative, for the purpose of making such repairs or adjustments as may be necessary to permit the unit to continue to its destination, or in the alternative, to be returned to the NRS Shop.

When so directed by the Senior Electronic Equipment Maintainer, Equipment Maintainers will train current or new employees in the operation and use of self-propelled heavy equipment in cranes, tampers and track aligners, as well as in the operation of vehicles and special units or tools. They are responsible, also, for the on-going inspection of such equipment to ensure that usage is in accordance with required methods and procedures, and for reporting violations thereof to the Senior Electronic Equipment Maintainer.


Education and Experience

A minimum of three years’ experience with repairing and troubleshooting of diesel engines, gasoline engines, small equipment and automotive electrical systems.

Possess a High School Diploma or equivalent.

License Requirements:

The incumbent must possess a valid CDL-B driver’s license free from violations and restrictions. Successful applicants will be allowed up to six (6) months from the date of selection to obtain a CDL-B driver’s license.

Based on evaluation of education, skills, experience and interview. All selected candidates will be subject to a full background investigation that includes employment and education. Discrepancies may lead to dismissal.

Appointment may be at a comparable level to current level of selected candidate.
