Job Description

Requirements
The Environmental and Occupational Safety Manager is a Senior level manager responsible for the development, implementation, monitoring, and review of GU safety management systems, to ensure the safety of staff, students, visitors and contractors, in line with current regulations and University policy. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Directs Joint Safety Team and contributes to Chemistry Safety Committees to discuss protocol submissions, incidents, near-miss events, safety developments and ideas for continual improvement.
Manages a Lesson Learned program that analyzes events, determining root causes, contributing factors, corrective actions, and communications to preclude recurrence for incidents, and encourage recurrence for positive lessons.
Develops, maintains, and trains staff in the requirements provided in Job Safety Analyses.
Oversees conformance with chemical safety, physical/life/fire safety, and emergency procedures, and ensures a regulatory compliant program.
Manages staff comprised Senior Industrial Hygienist/Waste Management Lead, Environmental Programs/Information Technology Lead, and Occupational Health and Safety Specialist.
Interacts with outside vendors, service providers, and emergency support staff.
Interacts with GU Police Department, Office of Emergency Management as needed.
Manages operations of the EOSH functional area, and directs the workflow of the Environmental Programs/IT Lead, Senior IH/Waste Management Lead, and Occupational Health and Safety Specialist to ensure effective course for EH&S and GU objectives.
Acts as primary liaison with faculty staff, and visitors to ensure overall compliance with DC and Federal agencies.
Collaborates with the Facilities Occupational Health and Safety Manager, and periodically determines areas of required assistance (e.g., industrial hygiene, construction safety oversight) that may be provided by Environmental and Occupational Safety staff.
Qualifications
Master's degree in environmental or safety related field, 8 years appropriate work experience in engineering, physical science with a minimum of 4 semesters of chemistry and one semester of organic chemistry.
Knowledge and experience should include safety training, such as HAZWOPER and DOT training.
Requires minimum of three years supervisory experience
Preference for CSP, CIH, or other professional certifications.
