The Opportunity

The Engineering Manager - Process Automation & Controls Manager is a skilled technical leader with the capacity to lead a team of engineers and technicians in the development & design of automated systems from concept through manufacturing. This individual will assess the current offering of controls, automation, & user interfaces across multiple product offerings leading the development of a best in-class standardized platform offering to be utilized corporatewide.

The Team

The Engineering Manager, Process Controls & Automation reports directly to the Director-Global Product Management, Process Automation & Controls. The Engineering Manager will lead a team Controls Engineers / Developers. Depending upon specific project requirements, this leader will be tasked with driving concurrent turnkey equipment automation through both internal factory resources and third-party integrators. All new product development for process controls and automation will be executed by this team.

Responsibilities

  • Empathic leadership in the direction and development of the process automation and controls engineering teams at multiple facility locations
  • Ability to lead direct team members while collaborating with and influencing matrixed team members
  • Strong collaboration with code development teams integrating physical controls hardware with application software
  • Partner with global functions of product management, marketing, sales, and technical experts in support of the technical requirements for the process automation product roadmap strategy development
  • Partner with technical resources at multiple locations and product families to develop the best-in-class automation systems to support our processing equipment in meeting market/customer requirements
  • Refine designs and offerings to transition from a ‘one off’ custom process to a standardized Configure to Order (CTO) offering while developing and maintaining an Engineered to Order (ETO) process for strategic accounts
  • Support application engineering process automation quotation process (currently ad-hoc) while developing and transitioning to a CTO program
  • Assure the overall output quality and efficiency of teams, continuously improving the process infrastructure, and growing internal talent
  • Maintain UL508 listing compliance while following established engineering standards and product integrity.
  • Review after market support and service requirements to develop a support structure strategy for North America in the short- term and globally long-term.
  • Continuous improvement mindset and leadership centered around quality, manufacturing efficiency, and cost reduction.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering w/significant controls automation experience, or Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) w/significant controls automation experience from an accredited four-year program.

Experience Level:

  • 5+ years of hand on process automation/control engineering experience
  • Minimum of 2 years management experience
  • Must have outstanding leadership and people management skills

Skills and Abilities:

  • Outstanding leadership and interpersonal team leadership capability
  • Experience with industrial process automation controls (examples: oil & gas, food & beverage, water/wastewater, chemical etc. Agricultural: Feed, Fertilizer, Grains are a plus)
  • Strong aptitude and understanding of controls/automation systems.
  • Organizational Agility: Ability to collaborate both vertically and horizontally in the organization
  • Capability to assess departmental resource needs and present strategy / justification
  • Adept at working with mechanical engineering teams to translate from system requirements to automation requirements
  • Attention to detail and ability to prioritize and manage time well
  • Self-directed and results-oriented in leading team to company objectives
  • MS Office platform proficient including Visio & Project
  • Proficiency in electrical schematic / control panel development and CAD systems

Technical Knowledge:

  • Experience with 3-phase power distribution design and implementation
  • Control panel design and architecture
  • UL 508 Panel Building Standards
  • IEC / CE -European Control Panel Standards is a positive
  • Capability to design process automation & control systems including experience / understanding of:
  • Pneumatic Solenoid Valves
  • Pumping systems with VFD controls
  • Motor controls for material handling systems
  • Automated weighing systems / load cells
  • Advanced PLC/HMI development capability
  • Distributed Control / Field Bus
  • RS232 and RS485 Communication Protocols
  • Experience with data collection software and methods
