We have a new opportunity for an Engineering Manager. This can be a remote opportunity or located in any of our offices to include Traverse City, MI; Dublin, OH; or Ann Arbor, MI.
The RoleWe are looking for a trustworthy and proactive engineering manager with numerous years of engineering experience and proven leadership skills. An engineering manager at Hagerty is responsible for ensuring that key project and engineering duties are fulfilled. They are responsible for solving any engineering issue that comes up in a project: answering technical questions, proposing budgets for projects, training new employees, and working with various other departments. Engineering managers can expect to work on many projects at the same time, build and managing diverse teams of engineers from different disciplines, formulate and execute strategies, research and develop new designs and products, and coordinate with other managers.
To be successful as an engineering manager, you should have exceptional foresight, great communication skills, a bias for action, working knowledge of different engineering disciplines and how they relate to one another, and an aptitude for managing risk. Ideally, candidates will have proof of their supervisory and technical skills, and an appreciation for the complex nature of the industry.
What you’ll do:- Supervise the work and delivery of multiple engineering teams as a front-line people leader
- Provide leadership to implement meaningful progress regarding engineering principles and quality best practices
- Hire employees and contractors; build and mature engineering teams
- Provide clear direction and instructions to engineering teams
- Solve complex engineering needs, identify trade-offs, publish designs and agreements, and implement plans to achieve outcomes
- Partner with Product to deliver projects and outcomes with quality and resiliency
- Determine the need for, and provide, training and talent development.
- Plan and execute strategies for completing projects on time, including proposing and managing budgets, milestones, dependencies and risks, and deliverables
- Bring strategic vision to help research and develop designs and product ideas
- Ensure products have the support of upper management and key partners
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field
- Previous engineering experience with proven supervisory and technical skills
- Proven experience leading engineering teams in an agile delivery model; proven experience maturing teams producing high-quality, tested code for consumer products
- Solid understanding of C#/.Net
- Highly recommended
- Experience building out integrations with third-party applications (such as Vertafore)
- Experience transitioning legacy applications to modern service-oriented architectures
- Familiarity with the strangler pattern and excited by the prospect of putting it to use
- Brings passion and pride of ownership of products and works to improve them from both experience and performance perspectives
- Master's degree in software engineering, engineering management, technical management, or business administration
- Ability to put in place metrics that drive real change and provide visibility into quality
- Someone who truly enjoys coaching other engineers to in both technical and human skills
- Desire to champion the continued implementation of automated test suits within elegant CI/CD pipelines
