Description: The Engineering Manager leads a team of in-house engineers, technicians and project managers responsible for customer project management, system engineering and design, system implementation, technical documentation, assembled product design, specification writing, plant projects, production support and new product development. As part of the leadership team, the Engineering Manager will employ Lean methodologies and tools to provide ideas, suggestions and strategies to accomplish business objectives. The Engineering Manager will supervise, lead and coordinate an engineering team to ensure that they are efficient, accurate, knowledgeable, and customer service-oriented.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Contributes to leadership team in a QMS manufacturing environment through decision making, project evaluation and engineering support.
- Hire, develop and train a team of engineers, CAD technicians and project managers. Set and measure performance expectations for all positions.
- Provides continuous coaching to employees for the purpose of improving job performance and professional development.
- Develop and promote a culture that supports the “expert” brand and builds on the lean manufacturing culture of eliminating waste.
- Manage and provide support for Engineered-to-order products. Deliver documentation package to Production team in a timely fashion.
- Develop and improve project management systems and tools for jobs secured through the bid letting process and other sales channels. Set standards for project management practices and provide training and oversight of the systems.
- Develop design standards application engineering tools which maximize customer satisfaction, design, assembly and service efficiency. Identify, implement and maintain the best design tools available while fully utilizing the design aspects of current software.
- Manage design and process improvements utilizing PPI, 5S, Lean and Six Sigma methodologies.
- Upgrade and improve the design systems to include as a standard: assembly instructions, layout and installation dimensions, wire kits, test procedures and other productivity enhancing items that are not presently engineered.
- Over-see and provide technical support to the sales team and the sales process. Help write proprietary specifications and maintain a library of supplier specifications. Provide cost estimates and technology appraisals for developing projects.
- Support the company growth efforts by demonstrating creativity, foresight and sound judgment in anticipating needs, assessing developing technology and solving problems.
- Identify and implement cost saving projects in the plant including automation, outsourcing, product standardization and new technology.
- Develop and administer an annual budget for departmental expenses and capital expenditures.
- Ensures project/department milestones/goals are met and adhere to approved budget.
- Ensures compliance with health and safety policies, regulations and guidelines including OSHA.

Education and/or Experience*:
Bachelor’s Degree or higher in electrical, mechanical or computer engineering from an accredited university. Minimum 5-7 years’ experience leading/supervising a technical team in a manufacturing engineering environment. Previous experience with traffic control industry a plus. Preferred qualifications: Certification in Six Sigma or project management such as CSSBB or PMP. IMSA certification a plus.

- Demonstrated ability to create and sustain a continuous improvement culture, (e.g. Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma).
- Demonstrate sound judgment in analyzing, appraising, evaluating and solving problems of a difficult procedural, organizational, administrative or technical nature.
- Have strong leadership and interpersonal skills, project management, organization, decision making ability, relationship building and interface well with others.
- Strong leadership abilities with capability to leverage resources, respond quickly, understand impact of changes and decisions, facilitate agreement, build collaborative relationships, and understand customer’s needs.
- Possess strong technical knowledge of current network hardware, protocols and standards.
Physical Demands and Work Environment: Must be able to verbally communicate clearly (regularly talk and hear), read at a distance and close to eyes with or without correction. Frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms. Occasional lifting up to 20 lbs. Works primarily office environment. Some travel required.
