JOB DESCRIPTION - CERTIFIED ATHLETIC TRAINER (ATC)
DEPARTMENT: EMORY SPORTS MEDICINE
REPORTS TO: PRN OUTREACH MANAGER
Position Summary:
The PRN Outreach Athletic Trainer is responsible for assisting the Head Athletic Trainer with coordination and delivery of high quality sports medicine services to all student-athletes. The athletic trainer must perform many of the outlined task with minimal or no supervision in the clinical setting. Problems encountered are of a moderate to higher level of complexity and a considerable amount of creativity, resourcefulness, and innovation are utilized in problem solving.
Supervision Received:
Overall supervision received by the Head Athletic Trainer, Emory Sports Medicine Outreach Program Supervisor.
Job Functions and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the assisting in the administration of all aspects of injury/illness prevention, recognition, evaluation, management, treatment, rehabilitation, and health care education and counseling for student athletes participating in the intercollegiate athletics program. This includes a primary sport(s) assignment, in addition will assist with all sports in collaborative team approach. This will include some nights, weekends, occasional holidays, and travel as necessary with selected intercollegiate teams.
- Documentation of and maintaining accurate injury records.
- Organization of rehabilitation and injury prevention programs.
- Cooperation and collaboration with strength and conditioning staff.
- Coordination and oversight of all necessary medical referrals.
- Collaboration with team physicians, Emory Student Health Services and other allied health-care professional providers.
- Direct communication with coaches, parents, student-athletes, athletic administration and other stakeholders when appropriate.
- Organize and participate in pre-participation physical examinations and follow-up’s as directed by team physicians.
- Athletic Training Room coverage. This will include being present in the Athletic Training Room during scheduled open hours to see walk-in athletes.
- Perform other duties and administrative tasks as assigned and commensurate with the normal activities related to collegiate varsity sport athletic training service.
- Promote and support the strategic plan of the Department of Athletics.
- Ensure all assigned tasks are in compliance with University, UAA Conference, and NCAA rules and best practice standards.
- Abides by all University, UAA Conference, and NCAA policies and procedures.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Possible lifting, bending, walking, kneeling, stretching, and stooping. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to allow for suture or staple removal. Requires normal hearing and eyesight to allow for patient interaction and transfer of patient information from the patient to pen chart. Need to have the ability to handle high amounts of stress.

Licenses/Certifications
BS degree required
NATA certification required
Current Basic Life Support/CPR Card
Basic First Aid is desirable
Experience and Skills
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Current NATABOC certification and eligibility for licensure in the state of Georgia
- Ability to work effectively and independently with students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members.
- Strong writing, communication, administrative and organizational skills.
- Two years of athletic training experience is preferred.
Physical and Sensory Demands
Good general health and stress coping ability. Full mobility and ability to participate in vigorous activity. Ability to clearly and effectively communicate with all constituents (patients, families, peers, and other healthcare team members) as needed for assessment, intervention, and professional development. Possess near vision acuity for accurate reading of equipment and recording on patient charts. Must be physically able to lift, support and move patients.
Working Conditions
OSHA Task Category One: There is an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids, or tissues or a potential for spills or splashes during the performance of the job. Universal precautions must be observed and protective devices worn by the employee when performing those tasks likely to cause exposure.
Physical Demand Capacity Levels
Requires manual dexterity and general strength and endurance
Lifting - routinely loads of 5-10 lbs. from floor to waist, waist to shoulder, shoulder to overhead
Carrying - routinely loads of 5-10 lbs. for 40-50 feet
Pushing - routinely loads of 5-150 lbs. on casters, runners, or pulleys
Sustaining a grip - routinely for 1-2 minutes of 40-50 lbs
Guarding a lift load - routinely of 120-140 lbs.
Machines, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids Used
Therapeutic exercise and modality devices including but not limited to: electronic equipment, exercise equipment, hydrotherapy equipment, electrical lifts, ambulation devices, wheelchairs, stretchers, medical monitoring devices, computer, phone, and dictation equipment.
