Emergency Veterinary Assistant

Eastern Maine Emergency Veterinary Clinic is looking for an experienced Veterinary Assistant to join their fast-paced team! This position is eligible for our quarterly profit-sharing bonuses and excellent benefits. This position is full-time and requires flexible scheduling and availability for weekend shifts and evening and/or overnight work.

The Veterinary Assistant has one or more years of experience in the veterinary field or other animal care industry. In this position, an individual can perform specific clinical procedures and tasks under the guidance of a Licensed Veterinary Technician or Clinician. This position has mastered basic animal husbandry and is then trained to perform/assist in hands on treatment and care of the patient.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provides compassionate care to patients and clients
• Keeps accurate medical records in accordance with hospital policy
• Prepares and maintains the exam rooms and treatment areas
• Provides basic husbandry for animals in the hospital, including but not limited to walking, feeding, watering and cleaning kennels
• Restrains pets for exams and treatments
• Explains needed follow up and home care instructions to owners
• Stocks clinic treatment area and exams rooms
• Maintains cleanliness standards of the hospital, including laundry
• Fills relevant prescriptions in the pharmacy
• Cares for all surgical materials; keeping the operating room properly stocked and prepared for surgery, assists in surgery and in recovery
• Performs basic, in-house labwork

Requirements:

• 1+ years veterinary experience or education, ideally in an emergency setting, strongly preferred. May be substituted with 2-3 years in animal handling experience in other settings.
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Comfortable talking with clients and answering phones
• Previous certification in Veterinary Assisting or other academic study in the field is a plus.
• Must have a positive attitude and be a team player
• Ability to lift 50 pounds

Eastern Maine Emergency Veterinary Clinic is an emergency clinic originally formed by local veterinarians in hopes of delivering prompt and conscientious emergency care for patients after hours, on weekends and during holidays. We are fully equipped and provide state of the art care. All of our doctors and technicians have training and experience in emergency care. Our hours of operation are Monday through Friday 5:30pm – 8am and Saturday & Sunday 8am – 8am (Open 24 hours from Friday 8am – Monday 8am).

Eastern Maine Emergency Veterinary Clinic is in Brewer, Maine, a city of approximately 10,000 people, which sits just outside of the larger city of Bangor: population 150,000. Brewer is located on the tidal Penobscot River, with 10 nearby lakes and countless streams.
