Job Description
JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision, provides support for physicians and nurses in the Emergency Department by performing tasks that assist in the care and treatment of patients.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
Provides support for physicians and nurses by performing a variety of tasks and activities to meet patient and department needs, consistent with the scope of practice for an unlicensed practitioner.
Responds appropriately to requests for assistance and facilitates the timely flow of patients through the department, ensuring the unit is clean, stocked, and ready to receive and treat patients at all times.
Assists with physical examinations and diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
Obtains vital signs, provides comfort, and assists with patient and family needs.
At the direction of a licensed health care provider, provides patient care by performing phlebotomy and 12 lead EKGs, transports patients to other departments, and places patients on cardiac and vital sign monitors.
Performs basic emergency medical procedures such as point of care testing, thermal applications, non-sterile soaks, application of simple dressings, and IV removal.
Demonstrates competency in approved orthopedic procedures such as orthopedic splints and devices, and fitting patients for crutches.
Obtains and transports lab specimens.
Prepares patients for initial exams, interventions, transport, and discharge.
Observes patients experiencing suicidal ideation, behavioral health issues, or other safety concerns to ensure safety and stability. Reports significant changes or unusual occurrences to primary registered nurse (RN). Records and reports all information within scope of knowledge.
Utilizes effective communication and problem solving skills to promote a positive work environment and resolve conflict. Collaborates with personnel in nursing and supportive services and with members of the health care team to promote respect in delivery of patient care.
Documents patient information and care provided.
Prepares patient rooms and participates in general housekeeping duties as directed by the nursing staff.
Cleans equipment and workspace. Recognizes equipment malfunctions and refers for repair.
Stocks supplies as needed.
Trains and cross-trains other technical staff as requested.
Completes Daily Checklists as required.
Represents the organization and the department in a professional and courteous manner.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Skills
KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS
Knowledge of medical terminology and procedures common to an emergency department.
Knowledge of universal precautions.
Knowledge of basic anatomy and disease processes.
Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal and local regulations and requirements.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects, and demands.
Skill in coordinating multiple departments and individuals for completion of a single task.
Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.
Required Experience
MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION
High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION
Two (2) years of emergency department, EMT, or similar experience. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.
MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) card.
