Job Description

The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV. This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.

Position Description

The Radio Frequency Group has an opening for an Electronics Technician (Technical Specialist) to provide support for all RF systems throughout the Collider-Accelerator complex. The selected candidate will repair, troubleshoot, construct, install and test all components of the RF system. This includes precision analog/digital electronics, power supplies, and high-power RF amplifiers. The selected candidate should also demonstrate a strong motivation to learn and apply new capabilities. This position offers an opportunity to work alongside a group of talented engineers on challenging projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoot and repair complex systems using electronic test equipment
  • Support the development and construction of prototype electronics
  • Repair surface mount circuit boards
  • Support operations and troubleshoot and repair RF systems during off hours

Position Requirements

  • Requires the equivalence of a technical institute or associate degree in a related scientific or technical field
  • A minimum of four (4) years of relevant work experience
  • Solid understanding of analog and digital circuits
  • Ability to read and interpret schematic diagrams
  • Effective communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Training, education and/or experience with radio frequency systems
  • Experience with repair on surface mount PCBs
  • Experience in Ball Grid Array (BGA) mounting and rework
  • Experience with programmable logic controllers (PLCs)
  • Familiarity with test and measurement equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers and network analyzers
  • Proficiency in the use of hand tools and some machine shop equipment

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Hand / eye coordination
  • Must be able to lift 40 pounds
  • Must be able to climb a ladder and work at heights above 6 feet
  • Must be able to work in tight spaces
