Position Title: Electrician
Reports To: Maintenance Supervisor
Salary Range: $50,000 to $55,000 depending upon qualifications
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
SUMMARY: The District is located on the Westside of the San Joaquin Valley between Merced and Fresno Counties. Cities within our sphere of influence include Los Banos, Dos Palos, Firebuagh, and Mendota. The District provides irrigation and drainage management services directly to approximately 40,000 acres of farmland and indirectly to a number of other public agencies in the region. The Electrician will perform work on on a variety of systems ranging from 120/240-volts residential to industrial pumps from 5 hp to 250 hp operationg at 480-volts. The Electrician will work in all kinds of weather conditions and be available to respond to emergencies during non-business hours.
Essential Functions
· Inspects, maintains, repairs, installs, and tests electrical circuits, transformers, switches, street lights, lighting fixtures, motor starters, motors, generators, outlets, control panels, electrical components of telemetering systems, cathodic protection systems, communication networks, and related electrical systems.
· Installs, maintains, repairs, overhauls, calibrates, and tests a wide variety of pneumatic, hydraulic, photo-electric, electric, electromechanical, and electronic recording, indicating, controlling, telemetering, and test instruments, including: digital and/or analog computers, printed circuits, magnetic flow meters, d/p cells, solid state tone equipment, and multiplex equipment; flow meters, pressure recorders, loss-of-head indicators, level indicators; pressure regulators, and gauges, chemical feeder controllers, pneumatic controllers and regulators, and telemetering receivers and transmitters.
· Performs troubleshooting and diagnostic work on a variety of electrical equipment; makes periodic preventive maintenance inspections of all metering control instruments, diagnosing existing or potential trouble; cleans, lubricates, calibrates, and adjusts as conditions indicate.
· Installs conduit and pulls wire for motors, control panels, lighting fixtures, outlets, and other purposes; lays out, installs, aligns, and places into service new metering and recording devices, calibrating as required; may extend or connect related electrical circuits; makes cable splices of various sizes and difficulty as required.
· Performs balancing operations and may make load computations on a variety of electrical circuits.
· Reads and interprets wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings, manuals and specifications in making installations or performing major work; makes as-built drawings of electrical installations.
· Makes estimates of labor, materials, and supplies necessary for the performance of specific assignments; orders materials and supplies.
· Directs the work of sub-journey level employees; ensures that proper safety precautions and safe work methods are followed, with particular emphasis on work performed on energized equipment.
· Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, outside agencies, and the public.
· Regular attendance and adherence to prescribed work schedule to conduct job responsibilities.
Other Duties
· May inspect, maintain, repair, install and test emergency power generating equipment.
· Maintains accurate records; makes oral and written reports of work performed.
· Uses and maintains a wide variety of hand and power tools and test equipment related to the work; operates a truck on a daily basis.
· Complies with all District policies, procedures, rules and regulations including all safety standards.

Knowledge of:
· Principles, techniques, tools, and materials used in the electrical trade.

· Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic malfunctions in instruments and telemetering systems.
· Operate motor vehicles and a variety of hand, power, and shop tools and equipment used in electrical installation, maintenance, and repair work.
· Ability to read, comprehend, and write plans, specifications, Operation and Maintenance manuals, procedures, schematics, wiring diagrams, single line diagrams, logic diagrams, blueprints, mechanical drawings and electrical plans.
· Make extensive repairs and overhauls to metering and control instruments.
· Exercise independent judgment and initiate action without close supervision.
· Make estimates of labor, materials, and equipment necessary to complete assigned jobs.
· Maintain records, document modifications made to systems, make oral and written reports and presentations.
· Pass pre-employment physical and background check.
Typical Physical Activities
· Operates District vehicles and equipment in collection system construction, maintenance, and repair work.
· Must be able to carry, push, pull, reach, and lift equipment and parts weighing up to 50 pounds.
· Stoops, kneels, crouches, crawls, and climbs during field maintenance and repair work.
· Works in an environment with exposure to dust, dirt, and significant temperature changes between cold and heat.
· Communicates orally with District staff in face-to-face, one-to-one settings.
· Regularly uses a telephone for communication.
· Uses office equipment such as computer terminals, copiers, and FAX machines.
· Stands and walks for extended time periods.
· Hearing and vision within normal ranges with or without correction.
Environmental Factors
1. Exposure to the sun: 50% to 100% work time spent outside a building and exposed to the sun.
2. Work above floor level: Some work done on ladders or other surfaces from 4 to 80 feet above the ground.
3. High temp: Considerable work time in hard manual labor in temperatures between 80 to over 100 degrees.
4. Humidity: Work in areas with generally low humidity.
5. Wetness: Less than 10% of the work time getting part or all of the body and/or clothing wet.
6. Noise: Occasionally there are unusually loud sounds.
7. Slippery surfaces: Occasional work on unusually slippery surfaces.
8. Oil: Some parts of the body in contact with oil or grease occasionally.
9. Dust: Works in or around areas with minor amounts of dust.
10. Irregular or extended work hours.
Desirable Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the necessary knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
· High school diploma or equivalent.
· Minimum of five years experience in electrical work at a level as prescribed in this job specification.
· Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the electrical trade. College or technical school coursework in electrical theory and practice is desirable.
· Experience working on electrical or instrumentation controls in the Water or Wastewater Utility industry is highly desirable.
· Any combination of education and experience which would likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities is acceptable.
License Certificate Registration Requirement
· Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the electrical trade. College or technical school coursework in electrical theory and practice is desirable.
· Valid California Driver’s License issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
· Proof of good driving record as evidenced by freedom from multiple or serious traffic violations or accidents for at least two (2) years duration. The driving record will not contribute to an increase in the District’s automobile insurance rates.
