The OpportunityWSDOT is currently seeking to hire an Electrical Signal Technician to perform skilled senior-level electrical and electronic work on electrical systems throughout the Olympic Region. This region-wide position will conduct diagnoses, preventative maintenance, repair, and installation of traffic signals, ramp meters, highway lighting systems, and highway electrical control systems. This position is critical in ensuring that our traffic signals and electrical equipment are operating at their best to keep our highways free of hazards and open to the traveling public year-round.
What to ExpectThis position requires the ability to work alternate and emergency shifts as needed. Therefore, responding to emergency situations in all weather conditions; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; scheduled and nonscheduled overtime are also required.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Electrical Signals Technician will:

• Perform preventive maintenance, installation, and repair on illumination systems, electrical services, traffic signals, ramp meters, flashing beacons, rest areas, and bridges.
• Troubleshoot and repair electrical services and highway related electrical systems using power tools and various electrical test equipment.
• Safely operate motor vehicles and equipment that require a Class B CDL.
• Perform traffic control.
• Work at heights up to 100 feet in a bucket truck, and/or other lift equipment and at various heights on a ladder.
• Read, interpret, and work with complex electrical drawings, plans, manuals, and other technical documents within the electrical industry.
• Assist with inspection of contract work related to electrical services, traffic signals, flashing beacons, highway lighting systems, and other electrical systems to ensure contract compliance.
• Implement WSDOT safety methods and procedures, wear proper PPE and Arc Flash rated apparel in daily work.

QualificationsThis position may be filled at the Transportation System Technician B, Transportation System Technician C, or Transportation System Technician D depending on qualifications.
Required experience to qualify at the TST B level is: ($62,748 – $76,416):

• Five (5) years of electrical construction experience; or three (3) years as a TST A.

Required experience to qualify at the TST C level is ($65,928 – $80,292):

• Five (5) years of electrical construction experience or an equivalent Traffic Signal Technician classification in another city, county, or state government; and must include at least four (4) years of experience within the traffic signal and illumination fields; or two (2) years as a TST B.

Required experience to qualify at the TST D level is ($69,264 – $84,396):

• Six (6) years of electrical construction industry, or an equivalent Traffic Signal Technician classification in another city, county, or state government. This experience shall be within the traffic signal and illumination fields; or two (2) year as a TST C.

Candidates at any level are also required to have:

• A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
• A Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) without air brake restriction or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
• Effective communication skills both verbally and in writing with a wide variety of people, including, staff, peers, vendors, contractors, engineers, etc.
• Experience using electrical and electronics metering and testing equipment.
• The ability to work well with a wide variety of people of all ages from academically, culturally, and socio-economically diverse backgrounds.
• Knowledge of power distribution, branch circuits, and high voltage (up to 480 VAC) distribution systems.
• The ability to work at heights of up to 100 feet in, around, and over live traffic from various man lifts/boom trucks and heights of up to 600 feet above water on Region bridges.
• Experience operating various power and hand tools; and equipment such as man lifts, forklifts, or scissor lifts.
• The ability to manipulate and move up to 50 pounds of equipment and move about unrestricted while climbing stairs/ladders/inclines and uneven terrain.
• The ability to respond to emergency callouts 24 hours a day; 7 days a week.
• The ability to see and differentiate colors to perform electrical and electronic maintenance and repair work.
• The ability to work from blueprints, plans, and wiring diagrams.
• A valid driver's license.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

• Journey-level Electrician (ME01, EL01, EL02, EL04, or EL07) - Electronics Certification by Washington State CET or International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians (ISCET).
• Associates degree in Electronics.
• Working knowledge of the Federal and Washington State codes (i.e. electrical, safety, traffic, etc.)

Important Notes

• As mentioned above this position could be filled at either the Transportation Systems Technician B, Transportation Systems Technician C level, or Transportation Systems Technician D level depending upon qualifications.

• The incumbent must be available to travel throughout the Olympic Region that extends up to the Canadian border.
• This position requires the ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays on short notice, perform standby and participate on the call outs on a rotational basis and during inclement weather.
