This role will be to be the Editorial Director for HowStuffWorks.com. HowStuffWorks has been falling down the rabbit hole of curiosity for more than two decades. Started by Marshall Brain (real name!) at his kitchen table, HowStuffWorks is an award-winning website staffed by passionate, talented folks who will knock your socks off with random trivia learned on the job. HowStuffWorks' editorial team publishes articles on everything from sea cucumbers to Alexander the Great and has fun doing it, while being careful to publish credible, unbiased, factual content. Every month, 10 million people come to the site seeking answers. Along the way, we've gathered 2.4 million Facebook fans, 134,000 Twitter followers and 114,000 Instagram followers.
We are looking for an inherently curious, editorially minded leader for our team. You ideally have previous experience in a leadership capacity and are talented at working across teams to ensure quality and efficiency and the best possible site experience. Ideally, you are already a fan of the site and have big ideas about how to take HowStuffWorks to the next level, as well as a long, long list of article ideas.
The Role You Will Have:
- Oversee editorial strategy and assignment calendar, leading weekly editorial and brainstorm meetings and pitching your own ideas
- Contribute to design and functioning of site (regularly meet with contributing site teams such dev, SEO, adops/sales, BI and social)
- Acquired deep knowledge and history of the site
- Measure top-performing content to guide future editorial assignments via Google Analytics, Tableau reporting and similar tools
- Report to site general manager and work in concert with the VP of Editorial
- Work with social to oversee and assist with growing subscribers on the newsletter and be unafraid to get in the editorial weeds and keep your editorial instincts sharp by weighing in on headlines, taking proofs and generally pinch-hitting if there's a need for more editorial hands
- Provide vision for HSW style and quality
- Lead direct reports through active leadership (biweekly one-on-ones, etc.)
What You Will Bring to the Team:
- At least 10 years experience in editorial roles, with at least 5 of those years in leadership positions
- Understanding of and experience in digital and social media
- Ability to manage a budget and juggle multiple deadlines and projects, and adapt to shifting priorities
- Command of editorial best practices and AP style
- Being a strategic team player invigorated by brainstorming ideas with others and the confidence to pitch outside the box thinking to management
- Strong knowledge of SEO best practices
