Job Description Summary
The Applied Behavioral Sciences division at Cuesta College is seeking a Full-Time Tenure Track Early Childhood Education Instructor. While the successful candidate's primary responsibility will be teaching sections in the Early Childhood Education Department in both Fall and Spring semesters, the candidate may also teach courses in the Education Department with additional college and division responsibilities, outlined below.

INSTRUCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Effective teaching begins with good preparation. Faculty are responsible for choosing appropriate course materials, including resources at low or no cost to students, developing a student-centered equity-minded syllabus, one that adheres to the college-approved Course Outline of Record, outlines classroom expectations, and content to be covered; as well as creating a plan for content delivery, determining the best way to assess student learning, and assigning grades. It also includes respectful instructor-student communication, availability during office hours, and identifying and connecting students with college services and resources.

Subject Matter Preparation

Preference will be given to candidates who:
Have recent successful experience teaching college-level, Early Childhood Education courses, such as Curriculum for Young Children , Principles and Practices in Early Childhood Education , Observation/Recording Techniques/Assessment, and Practicum: Curriculum/Environment Supervised Field Experience;
Have professional work experience, in the field of Early Childhood Education, with job responsibilities that include developing curriculum, designing learning environments, and using assessment tools in an early care and learning program.
Evidence of Outstanding Ability as a Teacher
Appropriate evidence includes, but is not limited to, experience, training, or achievement that the candidate has:
Commitment to staying up-to-date with the latest developments in Early Childhood Education and in collaborating with industry and/or professional organizations on curriculum and partnership development;
The ability to continuously reflect on, evaluate, and improve teaching methods;
The ability to organize and explain materials/instructions in ways appropriate to students' abilities and learning styles;
The ability to use teaching methods that engage students actively in their own learning, promote development of critical thinking skills, and encourage students to become lifelong learners;
The ability to use instructional methods that emphasize cooperation and collaboration and that reflect cultural sensitivity;
The ability to motivate students from a broad spectrum of cultural, academic, socioeconomic, and language backgrounds;
The ability to develop student learning outcomes and methods for assessing students' achievement of those outcomes;
The enthusiasm for, understanding of, and commitment to the role and purpose of the community college;
Familiarity with and willingness to expand the use of technology in early childhood education, including online instruction;
A commitment to the teaching profession, its goals and ideals, and enthusiasm for the mission of the community college.
COLLEGE AND DEPARTMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES
College and/or departmental responsibilities include the following activities:
Achieving and maintaining Cuesta College Distance Education certification;
Developing and updating courses and course/program curriculum;
Serving on college committees and taskforces (Participatory Governance);
Researching and writing program review;
Serving on peer evaluation and hiring committees;
Course scheduling;
Working collaboratively with full-time and part-time instructors in the department;
Collaborating with community about curriculum changes, job opportunities, or scholarship opportunities for students;
Maintaining collegial, professional, and ethical conduct;
Organizing and leading annual advisory meetings;
Coordinating/collaborating with the Teacher Pathways team to support future teachers, partnerships, and grants;
Teaching at the North County and SLO campuses, collaborating with both Children's Centers and the Director;
Regularly submitting assessment results into the college outcomes and assessments database.

Essential Functions & Qualifications

Required:
  • Master's degree in child development, early childhood education, human development, home economics/ family and consumer studies with a specialization in child development/early childhood education or educational psychology with a specialization in child development/early childhood education from an accredited institution; OR -Bachelor's degree in any of the above from an accredited institution; AND -Master's degree in social work, educational supervision, elementary education, special education, psychology, bilingual/bicultural education, life management/home economics, family life studies or family and consumer studies from an accredited institution; OR -The equivalent (candidates making application on the basis of equivalency must submit all materials requested for an equivalency judgment, indicated on the Equivalency Process link listed in Additional Information); OR -A valid Community College credential in the discipline
Additional Requirement:
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Preferred Qualifications:
Teaching experience in the discipline, community college level preferred;
Awareness of the philosophy and objectives of California Community Colleges;
Recent/current experience in an early childhood classroom and an understanding of the diverse program types and philosophies, as well as indicators of quality;
Knowledge of and experience with developmentally and culturally appropriate teaching strategies, curriculum, and early learning environments, including planning, implementation, and evaluation;
Experience with current/common assessment tools used in early learning classrooms, including their limitations and strengths;
Experience with K-12 education system, ideally related to child development and curriculum;
Recent experience working with racially minoritized and other disproportionately-impacted students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and particular fields shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
Willingness to examine and remediate one's instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized and other disproportionately impacted students;
Experience and skill with addressing inequity in the classroom and on campus;
Experience and expertise in culturally-responsive teaching the early childhood setting;
Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within early childhood education courses and classrooms;
Demonstrated knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic-Serving Institution designation for institutional, departmental and instructional practices.

Interview Process Information
Selected applicants will be asked to interview via Zoom for a full-time tenure track position as an Early Childhood Education Instructor in the Applied Behavioral Sciences Division on Wednesday, March 24th, Thursday, March 25th, and Friday, March 26th, 2021. Interviews will include a virtual teaching demonstration in front of the selection committee and Cuesta College students.

Second interviews will be held via Zoom on Wednesday, March 31, 2021.

The selected applicant will begin their full-time teaching assignment in the 2021-2022 school year which begins on August 10, 2021. Assignments will be day, evening, and online classes at the San Luis Obispo Campus, North County Campus in Paso Robles, South County Center in Arroyo Grande, other sites within San Luis Obispo County, or Distance Education.
