Job Description
This recruitment will be used to fill future full-time, part-time, and temporary Early Childhood Assistant positions at Oregon State University-Cascades. These positions are located in Bend, OR.

The Early Childhood Assistant in the OSU-Cascades Childcare and Early Learning Center (ELC) collaborates with the ELC Director and ELC Teacher in providing a positive learning environment and curriculum that support children’s social, emotional, physical, language and cognitive development. This position will serve in one of the three classrooms; infant, toddler or preschool.
OSU-Cascades Childcare and Early Learning Center is located on the OSU-Cascades campus in Bend, Oregon. The facility serves OSU-Cascades, COCC and the Central Oregon community.
Our program has expanded from a pop-up center that was opened to meet the immediate need during the pandemic, to a full-day childcare center with up to 30 children. Future plans include development of an early learning center with a 100-child capacity by the fall of 2022. Position Duties 65% Classroom Support
  • Collaborates with the ELC Director in planning, preparing and implementing curriculum in areas of motor, language, social, cognitive and creative art through specific activity areas (e.g., art, music, stories, games, play stations).
  • Interacts with children in small group, large group and one to one settings by directing activities, guiding freeplay and assisting children in self help skill.
  • Records and maintains children’s files (i.e. health and social records, parents schedules) and communicates concerns to parents as necessary.
  • Interacts with children and family members to nurture positive relationships and provide support in professional manner.
  • Monitors and assists with meals, nap time, clean-up, and hygienic care (toileting, handwashing, etc.).
  • Creates and maintains a safe, healthy, culturally appropriate, emotionally secure learning environment.
  • Leads, monitors, and organizes the work of student employees.


20% Instructional Design
  • Collaborates with the ELC Director to design and implement age-appropriate curriculum, that actively engage students in making connections, solving problems, and thinking independently.
  • Delivers quality lesson plans designed to meet curricular goals and the developmental needs of each child.
  • Follows a consistent schedule that includes one-on-one time, small and large group experiences, social and emotional learning, music and movement, large and small motor activities, skill development, indoor and outdoor activities, and effective transitions between activities.
  • Assists in practicum student evaluation.
  • Provides learning experiences in a constructive environment.

10% Behavior Observation
  • Observes and records specific development data on prepared forms as instructed.
  • Monitors playground activities to ensure compliance with safety.

5% Other
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

A minimum of twenty semester hours (thirty quarter hours) of college courses in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or Special Education; OR a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential; OR one year of full-time experience in a certified day care center or comparable child care program.

Additional Required Qualifications
  • OCC approved health and safety training (within 30 days of hire date).
  • OCC approved safe sleep training (for infant classroom) (within 30 days of hire date).
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a teaching team and follow directions.
  • A demonstrable ability to implement a culturally appropriate learning environment.
  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise a group of children and their activities by standing, walking, reaching, sitting (on floor, small chairs, &/or outdoors), stooping and lifting up to 40 pounds.
  • Have, or obtain within 90 days of hiring, current infant/child CPR & Basic First Aid; Blood Borne Pathogen training, and Food Handler’s permit.
  • This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in Youth Programs may have additional Criminal History Checks every 24 months.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Oregon licensing requirements and rules regulating childcare centers.
  • Teaching experience in early childhood settings.
  • Knowledge of community resources in support of families, i.e. health, nutrition, educational, medical, etc.
  • Training and experience with multicultural populations.
  • Bi-lingual preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Organizational skills including a demonstrated ability to do detailed work, prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).
  • Demonstration of self-initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and or implement trauma informed care.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule Monday through Friday approximately 8AM-5PM. Occasional evening work may be required.
This position is deemed essential and the incumbent may be expected to report to work during inclement weather, emergency and other University work curtailments or closures.
