Organizational Overview
Brookhaven National Laboratory is entering an exciting new chapter with one of the newest and most advanced synchrotron facilities in the world. National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) enables the study of material properties and functions with nanoscale resolution and exquisite sensitivity by providing world-leading capabilities for X-ray imaging and high-resolution energy analysis.
This facility is open to users from academia and industry and its operations are at a time when the world enters a new era with a global economy fueled largely by scientific discoveries and technological innovations. NSLS-II provides the research tools needed to foster new discoveries and create breakthroughs in critical areas such as energy security, environment, and human health.
Position Description
A Documentation Coordinator is needed to support the preparation, development, writing, and editing of a range of technical documents for the installation, testing, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of an accelerator facility, equipment, and beamlines. Working with NSLS-II Scientists and engineers and under minimum supervision prepares technical and non-technical reports, technical specifications, technical work documents, procedures, policies and other documents used in support of NSLS-II operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collaborating with managers, scientists, engineers, technicians, and operators, to identify and define processes and procedures. Observing operational activities and extracting/capturing information.
- Working closely with subject matter experts, managers and other NSLS-II staff to assist in developing documentation content.
- Editing and formatting documents into standard templates.
- Facilitating the regular review and revision of existing documentation.
- Ensuring that documents are clear, concise, and accurate; and that submission for review and approval, and resolution of comments are timely.
- Ensuring that documents are posted in the NSLS-II Share Point site for revision tracking and document control.
- Helping to maintain excel spreadsheets tracking documentation statuses and history.
Position Requirements
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Engineering, a technical field or other relevant field, or equivalent experience, generally on the basis of 2:1 (experience: college) years, showing progressively more complex responsibilities in a substantive and relevant administrative role. Additional education in fields specifically related to the position requirements may offset qualifying experience.
- Effective written and oral communication skills and the ability to provide high quality documents.
- Writing, editing, and proofreading skills, and the ability to read, interpret, and extract information from technical materials, including drawings, diagrams, schematics, and procedures for complex systems.
- Ability to communicate technical information clearly and effectively in easily understandable written and graphical form.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with a diverse group of scientific, engineering, and technical staff.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Experience as a Technical Writer in a technical, engineering, operations, or similar industrial environment.
- Advanced degree in engineering, English, communication, or a related discipline.
- Experience in an operating accelerator or reactor environment.
- Experience with Microsoft SharePoint or similar document management system.
- Knowledge of human performance factors and error trap precursors associated with procedures.
- Other information: Candidates selected for an interview will be required to provide work or writing samples.
