As part of the Corporate Core Technologies organization, the Sr. Distinguished Scientist will provide leadership in developing and executing research strategies to advance Enterprise Platform Technologies in areas of Polymer Biostability, novel 3D printing, Regenerative Medicine, and others as they arise. The candidate may also contribute to existing platform technologies programs already underway.
A Day in the Life
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.
- Provides leadership and establishes overall research approach to enterprise platform areas of interest in Polymer Biostability, novel 3D printing, Regenerative Medicine, and future additional programs as they arise. Includes alignment and integration of critical information and input from key stakeholders; establishes and executes operational plans; and coaching, mentoring and sharing experience and knowledge with other team members in execution of the work.
- Develops detailed plans (including resources, time, and budget estimates) for project activities. Organizes team meetings to define and execute work packets. Communicates project status to Leadership, and other stakeholders as appropriate.
- Through team, develops test methods and test plans, executes rigorous testing, applies statistical methods to draw valid conclusions, and documents the results.
- External Engagement
- External partnerships: Identify and establish relationships with outside organizations, potential technology partners, and universities as needed to advance business objectives.
- Participates in scientific meetings to gain knowledge about new technologies pertinent to business interests. Reviews and evaluates technical literature to maintain and extend technical competence. May contribute to scientific literature and conferences.
- Assesses Technology and Intellectual Property landscape.
- Investigates feasibility of applying scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions and products. Files IP with legal counsel as warranted.
- Other activities (but not limited to):
- Prepare and justify capital expenditure requests for procurement of laboratory equipment and instruments as needed.
- Collaborate and interacts with staff colleagues to advance overall departmental objectives.
- Responsible for the initiation, design, development, execution, and implementation of scientific research projects.
- Investigates the feasibility of applying scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions and products.
- Plans and executes laboratory research.
- Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the art principles and theories and may contribute to scientific literature and conferences.
- May participate in development of patent applications.
- May coordinate interdepartmental activities and research efforts.
- Bachelors degree required
- Minimum of 15 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 13 years of relevant experience
- Demonstrated leadership and translational success in developing and commercializing new technologies into medical device products.
- 10+ years experience in Research, Technology, and/or Product Development in the Medical Device industry
- 7 years leading engineering or research organizations or multiple major engineering/research programs.
- Strong depth and breadth of experiences across the Research, Technology, and Development life cycle.
- Expert level Polymer synthesis and degradation, Analytical Chemistry, or related expertise.
- Multi-disciplinary background that includes Biology, Biological systems, Bioengineering in addition to strong Materials related experience.
- Applied knowledge and understanding of biology and biomedical engineering to perform in vivo and/or in vitro product research and technology development activities.
- Strong business acumen, advocacy, and leadership influencing skills.
