The University of Miami Bascom Palmer Eye Institute has an exciting opportunity for a Director Technical Eye Bank.
The Eye Bank Technical Director is a member of the management team. The Technical Director oversees the day to day operation of the Eye Bank’s laboratory and manages all recovery and laboratory staff with the goal of maximizing the quantity and quality of tissue and autologous serum eye drops processed and distributed.
- Oversees the training and coaching of all recovery, processing, and laboratory technicians. Performs competency assessment following training and at least annually of all technical staff to ensure proficiency in all applicable procedure.
- Assists the Quality Assurance Director in ensuring the lab’s ongoing compliance with the eye bank’s policy and procedures and the guidance and regulations set by the FDA, AHCA, and EBAA.
- Serves as Medical Director designee to determine if tissue is eligible for surgical use according to Eye Bank policy and procedures for tissue procurement, processing and placement. Serves as a medical and technical consultant to the recovery technicians and to the donor coordinators on duty in the screening and determination of a donor’s suitability.
- Oversees the recovery of tissue throughout the Eye Bank’s service area, ensuring that tissue is recovered expeditiously and with the highest quality standards.
- Oversees all processing procedures at the Eye Bank, ensuring that they are performed as validated and with the highest quality standards.
- Oversees the distribution of tissue, ensuring that surgical tissue (both domestic and international) and research tissue is distributed to maximize use and honor the ocular donation.
- Oversees the autologous serum eye drop program, ensuring that processing and distribution of drops is performed with the highest customer service and quality standards.
- Directs the ordering and maintenance of all necessary supplies and equipment utilized for the daily operation of the Eye Bank, in the cornea lab and in the lab office, in the field by eye bank technicians, other trained technical personnel and funeral directors. Ensures that all necessary certificates of analysis are obtained to clear supplies for use.
- Maintains an adequate schedule for technicians including adequately trained part-time technicians to ensure smooth operation, scheduling these technicians and supervising their work. Approves vacations for staff and ensures adequate coverage.
- Works with management team to identify and implement new opportunities for improvement and expansion, including new services and technologies.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director
