Job Description
The mission of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public.

The Director is responsible for the effective and efficient operation of the Department of Social Work. This includes but is not limited to: identifying key department strengths and opportunities for improvement, applying process improvement tools (e.g., PDSA, Lean, and change enablement strategies) to increase operational efficiency and effectiveness, developing and implementing strategic and operational plans, measuring outcomes, and creating an environment of employee engagement.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Operations Management
  • Develops, implements, and manages processes and systems to ensure effective and efficient operations.
  • Establishes the department's strategic direction; moves the department to its next level of performance through breakthrough innovation, patient-centered and family-centered care and new ways of doing business.
  • Demonstrates an ongoing investment in and growth of, in depth knowledge, industry standards and opportunities.
  • Adapts to and applies expertise and innovation to support the institution's interests.
  • Develops and oversees action plans including benchmark data, milestone dates and deliverables, and outcomes goal measurement. Demonstrates improvements over time.
  • Oversees department processes and activities for safety, business continuity, and emergency plans.

Quality
  • Serves as a voting member of the Division of Nursing, Nursing Practice and Inpatient Operations QAPI Council.
  • Sets high standards for department products and services, including the achievement of efficiency and effectiveness targets.
  • Creates a climate of continuous improvement.
  • Maintains compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Established improvement projects in response to quality and safety surveys.
  • Is open to new approaches and alternative practices that will help meet institutional goals and objectives.

Personnel Management
  • Directs all facets of human resource activity within the department including request for positions, recruitment and performance evaluations.
  • Establishes and monitors staffing models for classified staff within the department.
  • Establishes performance and productivity standards for departmental staff.
  • Recognizes and rewards the accomplishments of departmental employees.
  • Coaches and counsels employees and, when required, implements the disciplinary process within institutional guidelines.
  • Enforces all applicable institutional policies and procedures within the department.

Finance
  • Establishes and monitors department productivity measures; maintains the department budget and is a good steward of department resources.
  • Provides management and oversight of the Patient Assistance Program.
  • Manages donor accounts and prepares annual donor reports.

REQUIREMENTS

Education: Master's Level Degree

Preferred Education: Doctorate (Professional)

Certification: Licensed by the State of Texas as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Preferred Certification: Oncology Social Work Certification

Experience: Ten years' experience in a large academic healthcare institution of which five are of management experience

Preferred Experience: Current or past history as a board member or service on a committee in the Society for Social Work Leadership in Health Care, Association for Oncology Social Work or the National Association of Social Workers. Expertise in Social Work and Oncology. Experience with Performance Improvement processes.
