The Director of Research Safety provides leadership and oversight to the research safety group of UAB Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S). This position develops, implement and oversee programs, policies and procedures to ensure a safe and healthy work and study environment for the UAB research areas.
The successful candidate of this position reports directly to the Executive Director of EH&S. They are to be viewed as the leader of change to adapt and thrive in an ever-changing educational environment.
The primary accountabilities below are intended to describe the general content and requirements of this position and are not intended to be an exhaustive statement of duties.
ESSENTIAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Responsible for leadership and management of University Research Laboratory Safety Programs, including biosafety, chemical safety, radiation safety, physical safety, as well as providing oversight and counsel, training, and continuing education as appropriate.
- Assists to liaison between UAB and the oversight groups in conjunction with the Responsible Officer (RO) - (DOT, FAA, USDA, NRC, CDC, DEA, etc.) to resolve interpretation issues and any conflicts arising during the inspection of safety related laboratory research. This also includes any radiation safety needs on campus or in the hospital. Responsible for ongoing relationships with the agency leads to promote a close working relationship with the agencies and UAB.
- Promotes laboratory safety management at the lab level through development of selected lab personnel to serve as health and safety champions to promote a positive culture of safety at UAB.
- Serves as liaison with the University’s Office of Risk Management and Office of Counsel relative to laboratory related accidents, illnesses and injuries by developing metrics to assess state of safety at UAB. Assists in development of mitigation and monitoring strategies to improve overall laboratory safety.
- In conjunction with the EH&S Industrial Hygiene and other EH&S programs perform workplace risk assessments through walk through and workstation observations.
- Serve as a member on various safety/safety related committees.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Starting Annual Rate of Pay: Commensurate with experience & qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree Physics, Chemistry, Biosafety or a related field and nine (9) years of related experience. Master's degree or Doctorate preferred. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
Candidate must have familiarity with various accrediting, funding and regulatory bodies involved in research and demonstrate ability to work with these groups. They must be able to coordinate activities and programs designed to meet compliance with regulatory and accrediting and funding agency requirements at UAB. The incumbent must have good communication skills, both verbally and written and must be able to coordinate with different groups and demonstrate the ability to work as a team member.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS/REGISTRATIONS:
Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business. Current underwriting guidelines include possession a valid driver’s license, issued in the United States; at least 21 years of age; at least three years of driving experience; maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources
- Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process.
- Knowledge of various accrediting, funding and regulatory bodies involved in research and demonstrated ability to work with these groups.
- Ability able to coordinate activities and programs designed to meet compliance with regulatory and accrediting and funding agency requirements at UAB.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills

- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, as needed
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office products
PERSONAL: In order to perform the physical requirements, with or without reasonable accommodations, must have sufficient mobility, dexterity, and endurance to perform emergency response and field work, walk up and down stairs, use ladders or enter confined spaces, and meet entrance requirements for laboratory areas.
