Overview
Overall responsibility for the preparation, rehearsal, and execution of all liturgical music in St. Dominic’s Chapel.
Essential Duties:
1. Is an integral member of the Campus Ministry team, participating in all weekly campus Ministry staff meetings and in periodic divisional meetings of the Office of Mission & Ministry.
2. Coordinates all musical aspects of the liturgical celebrations in St. Dominic Chapel.
3. Rehearses and directs the principal Liturgical Choir and from three to six smaller ensembles (cantors and accompanists) providing the liturgical music at all four weekend Masses in St. Dominic Chapel during the academic year.
4. Prepares liturgical programs for all liturgical events involved in Campus Ministry, including but not limited to weekly Sunday Mass programs, Retreat Mass programs, weekly Praise and Worship programs.
5. Collaborates with various college departments for special liturgies, including but not limited to Welcome Mass, Mass of the Holy Spirit, Homecoming Weekend Masses, Advent Service of Lessons and Carols, Aquinas Fire Memorial Mass, RCIA Mass, the Commencement Mass, as well as in any other occasional joint efforts.
6. Maintains and expands appropriately the Campus Ministry liturgical music library.
7. Ensures proper periodic and special maintenance of the Shigeru-Kawai grand piano and the Holtcamp pipe organ in St. Dominic Chapel.
8. Assists in the training of other liturgical ministers for St. Dominic Chapel, specifically Lectors Special Ministers of the Eucharist, Altar Servers, and Ushers.
9. Is a visible pastoral presence in the Campus Ministry Center.
10. Works individually with each couple preparing to be married in St. Dominic Chapel, assisting them in choosing liturgically appropriate music for their wedding liturgy, arranges for any soloists and instrumentalists for wedding liturgies, and has the right of first refusal as organist/pianist for wedding liturgies (separate additional remuneration for these services).
11. Serves on appropriate College committees at the appointment of the President or the Vice President for Mission & Ministry.
12. Provides opportunities for student leadership with Campus Ministry and its various ministries and services, supervises student leaders, and assists with student leadership training and skill development.
13. Provides pastoral care to students, welcomes students for one-on-one meetings, both scheduled and unscheduled, works collaboratively with other staff members on the Retreats Program.
14. Undertakes any additional responsibilities relating to liturgical music at Providence College at request of the College Chaplain/Director of Campus Ministry or the Vice President for Mission & Ministry.
Marginal Duties:
1. Perform all other duties as may be required.
Education and Experience Required
- Master’s Degree in music from an accredited institution, with a specialization in organ performance and/or choral conducting.
- Minimum of three to five years’ of experience as a director or assistant director of liturgical music in a parish or college setting.
- Membership in the National Association of Pastoral Musicians and membership in the American Guild of Organists and/or American Choral Directors Association.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare, rehearse, and execute parish liturgies in full collaboration with parochial leaders, one or more liturgical choirs, multiple cantors and accompanists, and other liturgical ministers.
