SUMMARY DESCRIPTIONThe Director of Development fosters a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization and directs the overall operation of the organization’s development department. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development is a member of the senior management team.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES- Provides vision and leadership for the Development Department. Sets and meets ambitious programmatic and financial goals. Assures the work of the NYCLU supports development efforts and vice versa
- Provides guidance, coaching and leadership to the Development Team
- Works with the Executive Director and other Senior Staff members to establish and refine the organization’s overall goals and objectives
- Develops and implement fundraising campaigns based on programmatic priorities; oversees establishment of operating plans and objectives; sets solicitation goals and priorities; and systematically reviews department fundraising performance
- Serves as a strategic thought partner with the executive director on strategic programmatic investment opportunities, fund development initiatives, and campaigns
- Builds the NYCLU’s capacity to meet ambitious fundraising goals
- Oversees the strategy and implementation of a sophisticated annual fund and leadership gift fundraising program
- Staffs the Board of Directors and its Development Committee
- Manages and monitors the Development Department’s revenue and expenses. Participates in the annual budgeting process
- Establishes collaborative relationships with development colleagues at the ACLU’s national office and ACLU affiliates nationwide
- Provides industry knowledge; implement best practices; and maintain accountability and compliance standards
- Responsible for managing a portfolio of high-capacity donors, closing six and seven figure gifts, cultivating and stewarding high-capacity donors; works with Executive Director to manage the executive portfolio
- Works across various teams to ensure the elevation of NYCLU brand with various audiences, particularly with donors and donor prospects.
- Develops and oversees new fund development initiatives, when appropriate
