Director Of Design

As a Director of Design at Substantial, you will lead design on cross-disciplinary project teams, contribute to the growth and mentorship of designers, and collaborate with company leadership on a refined and strategic design offering.

In this role, you will lead design on product teams from conception to launch, collaborating closely across disciplines and with client stakeholders to create compelling digital products. You strive to deliver world class thinking and execution in your work, inspiring fellow team members by fostering the talents and contributions of the people you lead.

Responsibilities

Provide design leadership on projects

• Lead and collaborate on multi-disciplinary teams to define conceptual directions, user interaction and workflow models
• Apply human-centered design and research methodology to produce actionable insights and drive design decisions
• Provide consultation to designers across projects to create solutions that support positive outcomes for clients and users

Mentor and grow a talented team

• Manage and coach designers, fostering learning and career development within a culture of feedback and continuous improvement
• Help to recruit, hire and retain top-caliber design talent on our growing team

Requirements

Who you are:

• A holistic design leader
  You see beyond the immediate needs of a product and its experience and understand the relationship between the needs of a client, their business, and end users. You identify and translate this view into day-to-day direction with your team, shepherding work forward while remaining focused on creating simple and sustainable solutions.
• A team leader and mentor
  You have experience managing product designers in a client services setting and the ability to champion and foster an inclusive team culture.
• An evangelist for Design
  You are a compelling story-teller, an adept communicator and an ambassador for design. You are passionate about design and technology and are experienced at educating clients on the value of design.
• A hands-on contributor
  You are a model of accountability and ambition, jumping in to deliver work firsthand without ego. As a life-long learner, you embrace new challenges and are a flexible and adaptive thinker.

You Have the Experience:

• 6-8 years of relevant experience in digital product design, creative leadership and team management
• A compelling online portfolio demonstrating strategic, conceptual and visual expertise
• Experience designing across multiple technology platforms (eg. browsers, applications, mobile and connected devices)
• Customer focused, self-managing problem solver, accountable and able to thrive in autonomous environments
