SunPower

The Director, EHS is responsible for managing and executing EHS strategy and EHS programs. Ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations, effective risk management and EHS value creation. This individual will drive EHS improvements and execution of key activities throughout SunPower regional operations, as part of a highly innovative and collaborative business model. The Director, EHS will serve as a SunPower subject matter expert on Environment, Health, and Safety and key ESG technical and regulatory needs, operational and design guidelines for EHS, and SunPower EHS and ESG best practices. The Director, EHS will provide leadership to the EHS team, working closely with global and site EHS leaders to translate EHS strategy into SunPower regional and site EHS guidelines and standards, including process improvements and enterprise software tools implementation. The vision for SunPower is that every SunPower employee will be a leader in EHS. The Director, EHS will play a key role in helping SunPower to achieve this vision through high engagement and empowerment with our employees. The Director EHS will also have responsibility for SunPower facility operations. Ensuring SunPower facilities provide safe, productive workplaces.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, align, and implement EHS programs, guidelines, policies, processes, training and systems for all SunPower operations that are compliant with applicable laws and drive SunPower’s EHS global mission, vision and strategy.
  • Collaborate with EHS teams and across regional leadership and management teams to support the design, development, and implementation of EHS strategies, programs, guidelines, policies, processes, systems , tools, training, best practices, and actions.
  • Monitor, interpret, and assess existing or emerging EHS laws, regulations, regulatory policy, and industry practices, determine operational and business impacts and develop and execute SunPower EHS strategies, programs, guidelines, policies, processes, systems , tools, training, best practices, and actions throughout the business to effectively manage applicable or relevant requirements, while driving the EHS mission, vision and strategy
  • Translate EHS strategies into long- and short-term objectives via EHS action plans, projects or initiatives that effectively manage EHS compliance and risk mitigation objectives with business objectives, operating plans, capital planning, resource staffing and budgeting for SunPower EHS operations.
  • Establish credibility across the organization by effectively serving as a company subject matter expert and/or leading individuals who serve as a company subject matter expert regarding needed multidisciplinary regional and site EHS Programs that support the assessment and control of EHS issues arising from varied regional business operations. EHS Programs will be based on local and enterprise needs and priorities. EHS programs include but are not limited to safety culture, risk assessment, lockout tagout, electrical safety, emergency preparedness and response, incident reporting and investigation, permit to work, fire and life safety, environmental sustainability, hazardous waste management, producer responsibility, lab health and safety, industrial hygiene, laser safety, biosafety, business continuity plans and ergonomics.
  • Establish strategies for risk management, monitor and conduct internal safety audit programs and effectively manage resources and budget.
  • Establish Incident Response Teams that meet regional and site needs for EHS management of incidents.
  • Support the assessment, selection, design, implementation, and maintenance of the EHS Enterprise Information Management System that impact SunPower EHS operations and/or EHS programs.
  • Partner and engage with regional leadership, business partners and customers to measure, understand, and deliver against their EHS needs. Assess and interpret the enterprise-wide impact of EHS-related activities to ensure lessons learned are realized and shared for continuous improvement of EHS programs.
  • Lead regional injury and illness-reduction and prevention-based safety-culture-improvement efforts, including proactive safety programs, safety culture, employee engagement and risk awareness.
  • Support site safety committees and integration of operational excellence programs and events into the EHS regional business model.
  • Help plan and participate in EHS compliance assessments working with site and regional, corporate resources, assessing compliance with global EHS and ESG standards as well as local/regional regulatory requirements and participates in risk-based programs for EHS compliance.
  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with the regional Facilities and Security, Human Resources, Procurement, and Finance to design and develop strategies, programs, guidelines, policies, processes, systems, tools, and training, needed to integrate effective EHS Risk Management and continuous improvement into regional operations.
  • Develop, measure, analyze and communicate both leading and lagging EHS Key Performance Indicator (KPI) and metrics and develop periodic performance reports to business partners. Build EHS performance reports to regional business partners. Partner with Operational Excellence team to continuously improve collection and reporting of EHS performance data.
  • Ensures proper preparation, maintenance, and renewal of contracts, permits, and/or licenses for business activities within the region.
  • Partner with the Product Development Team to design and develop strategies, programs, guidelines, policies, processes, systems, tools, and training, needed to integrate effective EHS and Risk Management into our product design, development, manufacturing process design, supply chain, and product end-of-life.
  • Serve as functional expert/mentor/support for all EHS staff members and other employees across SunPower on matters related to worker protection and physical safety.
  • Recommend corrective and preventative actions for any identified weaknesses in compliance controls or systems and suggest changes to reduce safety risks.
  • Ensure that professional development opportunities are available for the staff, succession plans are in place, future leaders are developed, and highly competent staff are recruited into the organization.
  • Translates EHS hiring strategies into regional hiring plans. Assesses candidates and makes hiring decisions in alignment with current and future needs.
  • Participates in design and implementation of EHS changes to process and structure.
  • Build strong working relationships with directors, managers, supervisors, and employees across the organization to develop, implement, monitor, and continually improve SunPower’s EHS programs
  • Develop, manage and administer accurate budget forecasts to ensure the EHS budget is within goal defined targets.
  • Effectively manage resources and budget in line with SunPower’s standards, policies, and practices.


Requirements

  • Experience with tactical and strategic safety regulatory leadership and direction as well as working with limited supervision while being responsible for project management, priorities assessment, global alignment, hazard identification and risk mitigation, and injury prevention.


Experience/Education

  • Minimum of BS Degree, Master’s Degree preferred, in Construction and Industrial Safety, Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Safety Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering. (Master's Degree preferred) or equivalent
  • 15+ years’ experience managing EHS policies, standards, programs, or procedures , preferably at a large scale construction, manufacturing or industrial enterprise.
  • Demonstrated broad technical and global regulatory experience, and able to effectively operate in a matrix organization to progress programs.
  • Experience with VPP, OHSAS 18001, ISO14001 or 45001 management systems.
  • Professional registration or certification is preferred in a directly relevant discipline with the most relevant being physical safety (CSP), industrial hygiene (CIH) or engineering (PE) preferred.
  • Previous management experience directing a site and or regional team of EHS professionals with a comparable scale/scope of activities to those of SunPower is highly desirable.
  • Requires high-level understanding of the regional implications for health and safety compliance for the company’s products.
