Job Description
The Director of the ElectroScience Laboratory (ESL) leads the laboratory in expanding its research breadth; serves as the chief executive and technical officer for the laboratory, working closely with key leadership within the College of Engineering (CoE), Engineering Research Administration (ERA), Sponsored Programs Office (SPO) and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE); provides leadership and strategic direction for ESL and leads the laboratory in the formulation and growth of large research programs; provides leadership in vision setting and strategic planning, enhances the public profile of the laboratory and external relations with government, industry and alumni, and stimulates and mentors faculty, senior researchers, staff and students; is responsible for ESL’s strategic plan, financial and operational leadership, and sets a culture of excellence, diversity and inclusion throughout the laboratory; provides technical leadership and collaboration in industry or government laboratory R&D projects; secures major research funding from competitive federal and/or industry grants.
Minimum Education Requirement: Doctoral Degree or equivalent educ/exp:
#1 Major: engineering #2 Major: Business Administration
Required: Extensive experience in industry, government, or academia with track record of leadership, innovation, and mentorship; demonstrated record of technical leadership and collaboration in industry or government laboratory R&D projects and/or in an academic environment; successful leadership in obtaining major research funding from competitive federal and/or industry grants; demonstrated ability to foster external research funding relationships; experience in creating and leveraging partnerships between internal and external entities.
Desired: Executive management and leadership experience; ability to effectively work with state and federal sponsors, and senior industry executives to realize ambitious visions; experience in developing organizations, systems and staffing for established and/or growing enterprises; demonstrated entrepreneurial mindset and accomplishments in building an enterprise; excellent oral and written communication skills; excellent alliance and negotiation skills. Familiarity with university environment and operations.
The Targeted Hiring Range for this position is $146,000 to $195,000
