Position Description:

The Department of English at the University of Iowa invites applications for the position of Director of Undergraduate Creative Writing and Associate Professor of English, beginning fall semester 2022. We seek a dynamic writer and teacher who works in poetry, nonfiction, or fiction.


This is a tenured position. Teaching will be at the undergraduate and the graduate levels, with a normal load of two courses per semester. This position requires committee responsibilities that contribute to the management of the English and Creative Writing major, the department, and the university.


The Department of English houses two robust undergraduate majors (English and Creative Writing, and English), an MFA in Nonfiction Writing, and an MA/PhD program in English Literary Studies, that coalesce in a community of approximately one thousand graduate and undergraduate students.

Education Requirement:

MFA in Creative Writing and/or PhD degree in English, Comparative Literature or related field in hand by the start date or equivalent professional experience.


Required Qualifications:

Evidence of expertise in creative writing and contemporary literature; evidence of effective teaching at the university level; a strong record of publication with a book of poetry, nonfiction or fiction in print; demonstrated commitment to diversity in the educational community.


Desirable Qualifications:

Experience in program and/or department administration; a publication from a prospective second book; demonstrated ability to teach a literature course.
