Job Description

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office is offering excellent career opportunities for qualified, experienced individuals interested in furthering their law enforcement careers as a Deputy Coroner I. Successful candidates will be responsible for investigating the circumstances of death; developing information needed to establish cause and classification of death; and consulting with physicians and legal authorities regarding cases; and performs related work as required.
Under the Office of the Sheriff, the Fresno County Coroner-Public Administrator is responsible to protect the interests of the community by determining the cause, circumstances and manner of sudden or unexplained deaths that occur within Fresno County. The Public Administrator manages estates and makes final arrangements for Fresno County residents who die without a will or any known relatives able or willing to act on the decedent's behalf to manage and resolve the estate. Note: The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill both permanent and extra-help positions. Individuals selected for extra-help appointment may be transitioned to a permanently allocated position at a later date as authorized by the Fresno County Personnel Rules.
As a condition of employment, some departments may require candidates to undergo and pass a background investigation and/or polygraph examination. These investigations include employment/credit histories, verification of education, arrest/criminal records, drug/alcohol use, and personal conduct. This list is neither inclusive nor exclusive; other relevant areas may be investigated and verified.

Minimum Qualifications:

OPTION 1:


Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in biological science, physical science, criminology, or a closely related discipline that is acceptable within the United States' accredited college or university system.

OPTION 2:


Education: Completion of sixty (60) semester units from an accredited college or university that is acceptable within the United States' accredited college or university system.

AND

Experience: Two (2) years of full-time, paid work experience as a Registered Nurse, Emergency Medical Technician, Licensed Vocational Nurse, Medical Technologist, Medical Laboratory Assistant, or Investigator.

OPTION 3:


Education: Completion of sixty (60) semester units from an accredited college or university that is acceptable within the United States' accredited college or university system.

AND

Experience: One (1) year full-time, paid work experiences as a Pathology Assistant or Morgue Attendant assisting in post mortem examinations and related duties.

License: Possession of a valid California Class "C" Driver's License is required for all 3 options.

SELECTION PROCESS:

Depending on the number of applicants meeting the minimum qualifications and filing requirements, applicants may be scheduled for the process listed below:

  • Online Examination - If required, the examination will be offered in an online format. Please indicate on the supplemental questionnaire if you have the ability to complete an online examination.
  • Certify Without Examination - In instances where the number of eligible candidates is less than or equal to the number of qualified applicants the Department is entitled to receive under Personnel Rule 4212, the competitive examination process will be waived and the names will be certified without an examination.

Successful candidates will be placed on an employment list, effective for a minimum of 3 months (may be extended up to an additional 12 months), and certified in final rank order as vacancies occur.
