Job Description
THE POSITION

The park is hiring a seasonal, full time wage (non-permanent) position to provide the public a safe and enjoyable environment for recreation and relaxation.

  • The estimated season will run from March through November.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Seasonal law enforcement position performing public contact, public service, and public safety work, while providing visitors with information regarding the programs, resources, facilities, and activities available to them at Colonel Denning State Park as well as other state park or state forest lands. Communicates and upholds all laws, regulations, and rules relating to the use of Bureau of State Park lands, while enforcing and ensuring compliance with Commonwealth laws.

Work involves patrolling the grounds, boundaries, and facilities of Colonel Denning State Park, to ensure compliance with Bureau rules and regulations and the enforcement of Commonwealth laws. Presents a professional image to the general public through adherence to the Bureau’s mission, professional language and conduct, uniform appearance, vehicle cleanliness and preparedness, a thorough knowledge of the park and its operations, a confident and helpful demeanor, verbal and telephone skills, and practiced visitor service skills.

Responds to emergency situations in a manner that’s consistent with park policy, by maintaining and utilizing the Emergency Manual. Completes monthly and daily logs including the status and condition of campgrounds, facilities, equipment, visitor safety, incidents, citations, arrests, accidents, maintenance, and attendance.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

Qualifications:

  • Must meet PA residency requirement – For more information on ways to meet PA residency requirements, follow the link and click on Residency.
  • Minimum Experience and Training Requirements - Successful completion of the DCNR Ranger Trainee program; or completion of 15 credits in natural or environmental sciences, natural resource management, park management, outdoor recreation, forestry, environmental education, ecology, wildlife management, or related natural resource or recreation courses; and completion of a department-recognized police training course such as the Municipal Police Officers' Education and Training Commission (Act 120), or completion of an equivalent law enforcement officer training or certification program that allows eligibility for commissioning as a police officer.
  • Necessary Special Requirement - Possession of a valid Class C driver's license.
  • Condition of Employment - Must be at least 21 years of age at time of employment.
  • Condition of Employment - Possession of a valid certification or its equivalent in first aid and adult, child and infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as approved by the PA Department of Health for professional rescuers or healthcare professionals.
  • Post Employment Requirement - Must obtain commission as a State Park or State Forest Officer that includes powers of arrest and maintain this commission during employment in this job.
