Expertise working with data and data visualization tools (such as Tableau, Power BI, Shiny, d3, Looker, etc.) for data analysis and presentation are highly desired. Initiative and creativity are important qualities in this position, as well as excellent communication and advanced technical skills. Must work well within a team environment and with a variety of stakeholders. Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement.
Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
This position performs advanced (senior-level) data visualization,
working independently and with minimal supervision within the Data Viz Team. Essential job functions are as follows:
EJF 1 40% - Data management, cleaning, and visualization: Collects, cleans, and formats datasets, and updates existing and designs new opioid data visualization products. Translates technical public health and surveillance data into plain language and applies data visualization best practices into the design of interactive dashboards, reports, and other data visualization solutions. Prepares professional quality reports, presentations, and interactive dashboards that incorporate engaging and appropriate visualization of data, to include graphics, tables, and maps.
EJF 2 35% - Data viz subject matter expertise: Serves as a member of the Data Viz Team within CHS. Participates in overall team goals and activities and provides technical assistance to team members. Works with program subject matter experts to understand nuances of diverse datasets and incorporates this knowledge into opioid data products. Utilizes these insights to assist the Data Viz Team in providing direction and guidance on the availability, analysis, and interpretation of socioeconomic, demographic, and public health data from a wide variety of sources related to the opioid epidemic.
EJF 3 20% - Project management functions and coordination of stakeholder requests: Responds to and coordinates ongoing reporting and special opioid requests, particularly requests from DSHS and HHSC partners. Serves as a liaison with internal and external partners to produce special request opioid data products.
EJF 4 5% - Other duties: Performs other duties as assigned, including but not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
Knowledge Skills Abilities:
Knowledge of data visualization theories and best practices
Knowledge of accessibility requirements and best practices related to data display
Knowledge of common health status, socioeconomic, and demographic measures used in public health
Knowledge of programming logic and scripting
Skill in the use of Tableau or other data visualization software
Skill in graphic design software and multimedia packages, especially Adobe Creative products
Skill in graphical presentation of data including charts, tables, and maps
Skill in both verbal and written communications
Ability to plan and implement complex design projects
Ability to communicate effectively with data owners and diverse audiences
Ability to maintain effective working relationships
Ability to manage and manipulate data, using Excel or other appropriate software
Ability to organize and prioritize work and meet deadlines
Ability to exercise independent judgment and show initiative

Initial Selection Criteria:
Education and/or experience in the creation of data visualizations.

This is a contract-funded position scheduled to run through August 2024.
