Job Description

SMASH is an organization committed to eliminating barriers faced by underrepresented young people of color in science and technology. We’re looking for an outstanding Data Insights & Reporting Manager to serve as a key member of our operations team with a concentration in development as we expand relationships with individuals, corporations and foundations.


The Data Insights & Reporting Manager will help to coordinate the organization's fundraising plans for sustaining and growing relationships with individual donors of all levels, including the major donor and the annual fund portfolios. They will work on data and reporting methods for the organization, in collaboration with team members. The Data Insights & Reporting Manager directly reports to the Chief Operations Officer, with a dotted line to the Chief Development Officer.

The broad responsibilities and duties of the Data Insights & Reporting Manager include but are not limited to the following:

Data Reporting and Database Management/Prospect Research/Administrative Services (Org Wide) (35%)

  • Provide effective advice and analytics to key stakeholders to influence the success of campaigns through data selections and segmentation strategies that are designed to improve ROI outcomes
  • Provide effective strategy analytics and insight through business intelligence and predictive modeling to service the needs of the broader fundraising/ business unit teams and assist with management reporting and decision making
  • Assist with providing campaign reporting with key insights, learning and conclusions based on the data available, in a timely and accurate manner
  • Provide the wider business units/stakeholders with accurate and agile reporting, insights and recommendation within the time frame as requested by the organization units.
  • Demonstrate an understanding and communicating with business units/stakeholder their requirements and provide unique insights and advice to drive improvements to enhance revenue
  • Review and make recommendations around data integrity procedures in accordance to ensure the quality and efficiency of data input from all areas of the organization
  • Make recommendations through best practice with data analytics so to minimize to mitigating risks
  • Coordinate and manage database content, including contact reports, data maintenance, and prospect research.
  • Assess database needs for SMASH and implement solutions (e.g. migrations to Salesforce).
  • Evaluate best practices in data management with other organizations that use Salesforce to integrate/apply for the team.
  • Collaborate with the Data Analytics Manager and members of the Operations team on data reporting and needs of the organization
  • Serve as a key member of the Operations team
  • Assist frontline Development colleagues in identifying high-capacity donors. Develop strategies to initiate and build relationships with donors.
  • Identify social media “influencers” and create strategies for partnerships/relationships with them to promote SMASH.
  • Assist the COO, CEO, and Development team with scheduling meetings and submitting monthly expense reports.

Donor Stewardship (Development) (35%)

  • Work with Development colleagues to coordinate strategic communications that are timely and accurate to support donor retention and engagement, including but not limited to acknowledgements through various channels, gift reports, impact report, media and public relations coordination.
  • Coordinate donor stewardship articles in SMASH newsletters and social media channels. Work with other teams in SMASH to produce content (written, video, etc.).
  • Help build and distribute interactive SMASH collateral materials.
  • Help to develop and manage stewardship campaign for Giving Day.
  • Explore best practices for donor stewardship.

Event Coordination (Org wide) (20%)

  • Act as key coordinator on the Development team for all SMASH site tours in California; partner with Development colleagues for site tours outside of California; and key coordinator for the Operations team for organization wide events
  • Plan and implement donor recognition events such as regional salons in collaboration with Events teams.
  • Manage Development’s role with signature events at the Kapor Center such as our annual Impact Awards and (one other here).
  • Identify, strategize, and book community partners, social media “influencers,” or VIPs for appearances at SMASH events and locations.

Annual Fund Management (10%)

  • Develop and implement strategies for best practice annual-fund donor acquisition, renewal/upgrades, and stewardship.
  • Collaborate with advancement, communications, and design staff to conceptualize, design, and write Annual Fund campaign and materials.
  • Coordinate the execution of Annual Fund, including direct mail/email/social media appeals, monthly donors and online giving strategies, and ongoing cultivation and stewardship. Implementation of Annual Fund communications plan and timing, in collaboration with the communications team.
  • Track and report on results of appeals and special campaigns, adjusting strategies as needed.
  • Build donor relationships with small annual and monthly donors, providing needed cultivation, stewardship and opportunities to make more substantial gifts over time.
  • Develop and manage one day campaigns such as Giving Day
  • Attend development events (May require some evening and weekend work).
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Statistics, Analytics or similar discipline
  • At least five years of experience in nonprofit fundraising work.
  • Strong knowledge base of annual giving programs, including direct mail and online campaign/mass marketing experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Minimum 3 years experience and understanding of data reporting, management & analytics Direct Marketing, customer loyalty programs including direct mail, electronic marketing, telemarketing and commercial programs such as raffles/lotteries.
  • Experience researching, testing, analyzing & reporting on campaign effectiveness, to make recommendations for future strategy/testing for all business units
  • High level of experience with Microsoft Office Suite, and experience/management of donor database software (DonorPerfect, The Raiser’s Edge, Salesforce etc.), and online marketing and email platforms (Luminate, Constant Contact, etc.).
  • Ability to take initiative and to work independently, while also being a dependable team player.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and strong planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Flexible – ability to work evenings and weekends as necessary.
  • Able to travel 10% of the time to SMASH locations
