Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Data Center Infrastructure Specialist II (DCIS) for the Office of Information Technology- Enterprise Infrastructure (OIT-EI). Reporting to the Manager of Data Centers and Technical Support (DCTS), the DCIS II provides direct support for the operation, monitoring and maintenance of the data center cooling, power, monitoring, fire suppression, life safety and security infrastructure components and service delivery to data center tenants and OIT staff. This includes facilitating the support of maintenance contracts, service and repair facilitation and acquisition of data supplies and other consumables. Under the direction of the Manager of DCTS and senior DCIS staff, DCIS II may participate in the installation and configuration of infrastructure components.

    Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Interfaces with data center tenants on day to day hosting matters to assure delivery of data center services consistent with agreed upon service levels.
  • Monitors and reports on physical access to secure areas in and around the data center.
  • Works with senior DCIS staff to maintain data center documentation including facility diagrams, infrastructure component and supply inventories.
  • Performs day to day monitoring of infrastructure usage and performance metrics, detect and resolve or escalate operational issues by consulting with technical support staff to resolve service issues.
  • Provides direct support of the EI Xerox production printer environment that supports University student system applications.
  • Works with senior DCIS staff to ensure the proper physical up keep of the data center facility to ensure it’s safe and reliable use by the tenants and support personnel.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.


Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong data center operations background and knowledge of data center infrastructure components including cooling, power and monitoring technology and solutions, along with basic understanding of data center operations.
  • Must have a strong technical background in Xerox production print environments.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
  • Ability to use a computer workstation running various operating systems such as Windows 10, Mac OS X, etc, along with standard web browsers such as Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.
  • Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver’s license would be required for this position.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Prefers a minimum of 1 year experience working in a data center.
  • Experience in data center environments and data center print operations.
  • Experience in working in an educational/university environment.


Equipment Utilized
  • Basic hand and power tools, multimeters and other test devices, utilize A-frame folding ladder, extension ladder, hand truck, operate computer room infrastructure components such as computer room air conditioners, Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), Power Distribution Units (PDU), raised floor tile pullers, rack lift, etc.


Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Ability to lift 30 lbs. to shoulder height; be able to climb access ladders.
  • Ability to walk safely on roof environment.
  • Weekend and evening hours may be required.
