CVD Coating Furnace Operator

Orwell, Ohio

12 hour Night Shift Rotation


Job Summary: Operate CVD coating furnaces to coat carbide and cermet inserts.


Key Job Responsibilities

Load and unload fixtures with the product into furnaces. Ensure that the product is set up correctly and sufficiently clean. Enter product weights and desired coating cycle information and other related data into the computer as required. Start and monitor the coating process. Properly clean fixturing and base plates between heats. Ensure an adequate gas supply. Replace gas tanks as needed. Ensure targets and melts are adequate to run the process being loaded. Perform tests on standards to ensure coating thickness and adhesion are within specifications. Perform batch cleanings at proper intervals. Will be responsible for setting up and separating product. Keep area and equipment clean.


  • Will be required to pass a Respirator Medical Evaluation and participate in the Plant Emergency SCBA response team for responding to gas emergencies.
  • Must also obtain clearance from the Department of Homeland Security to work in CVD department.
  • Self-contained breathing apparatus required for specific tasks. Environment monitored for hazardous gases.


Key Job Accountabilities

Job performed without constant supervision. Incumbents are responsible for the furnace performance. Job duties are performed with latitude. Supervisors must be notified of any deviation from operating procedures.


Knowledge and Skills

Understand oral and written communications and instructions. Must be able to do basic math. Must be able to use 30X microscope. Must be able to handle inserts per handling guidelines. Need to be able to communicate effectively with supervisors and co-workers. Possess the mechanical skills to do the necessary batch cleaning. Must be able to read and understand operating procedures. Knowledge and ability to perform necessary actions in emergency situations such as power outages, etc. Proficiency reached through on the job training in 12-18 months.


Work Environment

Controlled temperatures and humidity room. Dust collection and system in place. Safety glasses with side shields required. Wear safety shoes where required. Self-contained breathing apparatus available in case of a furnace malfunction. Environment monitored for hazardous gases. Not over eighty-five db. for more than eight hours on a time-weighted average. Hearing protection recommended and incumbent placed in a hearing preservation program.


Physical Demands

7 to 9 hours per 12-hour period of intermittent walking and standing with break opportunities. Normal strength required assembling and disassembling furnace sections. Lifting objects up to 33 pounds (some reaching as much as, but not more than 60 lbs.)


Problem Solving

Solve furnace-related problems by using learned knowledge and reasoning skills and by consulting supervisors and co-workers.
