TEMPORARY EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY
CUSTODIAN
SALARY RANGE: $16.98 per hour (Minimal benefits only)
FINAL FILING DATE: Open until filled.
THE JOB: Under general supervision, performs a variety of custodian maintenance and minor repairs to
the City’s buildings and grounds; assists with the set up for meetings, conferences, etc.; and performs
related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLILITIES:
Empties waste and trash receptacles and disposes of dirt picked up while sweeping and cleaning floors;
sweeps and mops floors; applies floor wax and buffs floors after drying; vacuums and cleans carpets; dusts
counters, table tops, desks and other horizontal surfaces; cleans windows and Venetian blinds; cleans
toilets, commodes and urinals; cleans bathroom stalls and mirrors and cleans and mops bathroom floors;
replaces paper goods, soap and other bathroom supplies; cleans up spills, vomit, broken glass, etc.
resulting from accidents and emergencies; sets up and takes down tables and chairs for meetings,
conferences, recreation activities and programs; changes out burnt out bulbs and performs minor repairs to
furniture and power equipment used in cleaning; orders custodial supplies through the department
secretary; climbs a ladder to clean and dust high places and change light bulbs; performs a variety of light
manual labor tasks as assigned; regularly inspects electrical power equipment used in cleaning and reports
damage or malfunction; opens up and secures buildings for authorized people; and performs other duties
as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:
Knowledge of: Cleaning techniques and chemicals used in custodial maintenance; operation and
maintenance of hand tolls and power equipment used in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings; safe
working practices and procedures used in custodial maintenance; basic arithmetic; English; reading.
Ability to: Perform custodial maintenance to the City’s buildings, restrooms and grounds; work without
direct supervision; work with groups using the buildings and respond to their needs; maintain basic
records and files; follow written and verbal instructions; turn security systems on and off; perform light
manual labor for sustained periods; perform light to moderate lifting; establish and maintain cooperative
working relationships with other; read and write at the level required for successful job performance.
Previous custodial experience preferred.
REQUIREMENTS:
A) Must possess valid California Motor Vehicle License.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Requires average hand/eye coordination; hearing range sufficient to detect noises during operation of
maintenance equipment, signals and commands; above average strength and the ability to lift, carry,
push and pull items in excess of 100 pounds; ability to concentrate for extended periods while
performing duties and while maintaining a constant awareness of safety hazards and potential danger.
EXAMINATION PROCESS:
Applications will be evaluated and applicants who appear to be most qualified in terms of experience and
training will be invited to participate in job-related examinations (i.e. written, practical, oral) designed to test
applicants for knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the job. Each
examination must be passed before proceeding to the next phase of the examination process. Prior to
appointment a background investigation that will include a fingerprint check will be conducted. Following
initial offer of employment, employee will be required to pass a medical examination including a
drug/alcohol screen administered by city physicians. The probation period is one year and is considered
an "on the job" examination. If successfully completed, the employee is granted "regular employee" status.
