Job Description
Overview: The Lawrenceville School announces a job opening for a Curator of the School’s Permanent Collection and Director of its galleries. The Curator/Gallery Director is reponsible for managing and maintaining the School's collection, developing and coordinating shows, and electronic and in-person security. The strongest candidates will have a demonstrated ability to work independently and be effective “self-starters” in managing numerous projects at the same time.
Responsibilities: The curator part of the position includes:
- The care and maintenance of the School’s Permanent and Furnishings Collection of art and artifacts, including proper on- and off-site storage. In addition, the position includes
- Cataloging, researching and preparatory handling of artwork for storage or exhibition
- Processing of loans and acquisitions
- Coordinating and mounting 3 exhibitions annually in the Rotunda Gallery
- Maintenance of collection software and gallery webpage
- Development and stewardship of the permanent collection, including liaison work with Alumni and Development Office
The gallery director part of the position includes:
- Coordinating and installing approximately five shows per year in the “white galleries”, including two faculty or student shows and three shows of regional artists
- Working to ensure representation of diverse artists’ work to represent and coordinate with the school’s commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
Both parts of the job include:
- Security: monitoring electronic security and maintaining a presence in the galleries via self or others (parent volunteers, students, etc.)
- Maintenance of gallery conditions: lighting, environment (temperature, humidity)
- Outreach to the Lawrenceville community of teachers, parents, alumni and, when appropriate, the outside local community
- Gallery Public Relations: design of brochures and mailings and liaison work with Lawrenceville Communications Department
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor's degree in art, art history or museum studies
- Experience in gallery management
- Aesthetic design skills for exhibition design, brochure creation, etc.
- Facility with collection management software (can train)
- Strong organizational skills and project management
