Counselor - RSAT


Job summary:

The Counselor will deliver direct substance abuse counseling to adult clients at Palmer Correctional Facility.


Qualifications:

Required:

  • The ability to acquire Chemical Dependency Counselor II or QAP equivalent certification within 3 years of date of hire
  • Ability to pass a drug screening and State of Alaska background check

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in human services or closely related field
  • Experience in substance abuse or mental health field including:
    • Delivering direct therapeutic services (group and individual)
    • Crisis intervention skills
    • Treatment planning and treatment team participation
    • Case management

Skills required:

  • Ability to:
    • Build rapport with clients and staff
    • Utilize tools such as DSM 5 and ASAM with clients
    • Establish and maintain clear therapeutic boundaries
    • Work as a team member including accepting and providing supervision
  • Great written and verbal communication skills
  • Punctuality reporting to work and in delivery of direct services
  • Basic computer skills including internet navigation and fluid use of electronic communication tools

Job responsibilities:

  • Welcome new clients by orienting the client to the program rules and expectations. All matters of confidentiality and client rights will be emphasized with the client
  • Facilitate treatment groups using Set Free Alaska approved treatment curricula
  • Develop written treatment plan using the client’s strengths and individualized treatment needs, meeting the standards authorized by the overseeing state agency. Aid the client to participate in the development of this treatment plan and conduct treatment plan reviews as needed through the duration of treatment
  • Prepare and conduct individual counseling sessions, structuring the sessions according to the needs, goals and individual strengths and limitations of each client
  • Attend weekly clinical treatment team meetings
  • Provide intervention services telephonically or in person
  • Recommend appropriate discharge for each client. Decisions will be based on progress/ lack of progress and treatment needs. Appropriate referral for continued care or maintenance will be made at each discharge
  • Provide case management and work cooperatively with clinical team
  • Complete documentation in a timely manner, for each therapeutic intervention and treatment plan review. All documentation is to comply with overseeing state or federal guidelines. Additional reports and request may be made from the management
  • Participate in the development and evaluation of the program curricula and follow the guidelines set forth in the SFA policies and procedures to receive approval of curriculum changes
  • Provide supervision for a trainee or intern in a manner that allows for learning of skills with increasing responsibilities if needed

Supervision:

  • Counselor I will receive direct supervision from the Program Coordinator
