Job Description
General Information

This is public safety work that involves providing for the care and security of inmates confined within a correctional facility or jail.

Reservations for computers are encouraged. Computers may be reserved in 30 minute time periods. Consecutive 30 minute time periods are also available. Please call (251) 470-7727, extension “0” to make a reservation.

Walk-ins are welcome. However, priority use of the equipment will be given to those with reservations. Computer stations are limited in order to maintain social distancing and will be cleaned at the end of each timed reservation.

While on site, please take precautions to protect yourself and others from Covid-19 by wearing a mask and maintaining social distance as outlined in the Center for Disease Control (CDC) Guidelines.

Please also note that our lobby has limited capacity in order to maintain social distancing. No more than one person may accompany those using the computers and both parties must remain in the individual kiosk area that was reserved.

SPECIAL NOTICE
: CORRECTIONS OFFICERS MUST BE WILLING AND ABLE TO WORK SHIFTS AND SCHEDULES REQUIRED BY THE MOBILE COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT.

EXAMINATION: The examination will consist of two components: (1) a written test counting 50% of the final grade, and (2) a rating counting 50% in which applicants will be scored on the basis of an evaluation of their education, training, experience and personal qualifications as outlined by the candidates' sworn statements in their application, upon corroborative evidence obtained by investigation and the applicants' responses to the Supplemental Questions. Applicants must provide all background information and supportive documents as requested on the application, supplemental questions and job posting. Applicants must score at least 70% on each section of the examination in order to be eligible for a place on the employment register.

DATE OF EXAMINATION: Applicants will be individually notified when and where to report for the written examination.

Allow 2 - 3 hours for written testing. A photo ID will be required for admittance. Electronic devices are NOT permitted in the test room (leave such devices in your motor vehicle upon arrival at the test site).

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from a standard senior high school, or the successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) test, and preferably some police or corrections related experience or training; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be at least 19 years of age and must possess a valid driver's license from state of residence. Mobile County Sheriff's Department requires successful completion of a physical agility test administered by the Sheriff's Department.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE WORK: Some knowledge of corrections objectives and procedures and of Federal and State law enforcement agencies and their operation or ability to acquire this knowledge; some knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures as they apply to the protection of inmates who are institutionalized or the ability to acquire this knowledge; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to maintain discipline of inmates under institutional conditions; ability to make routine reports; ability to learn and teach rules and regulations of the corrections facility; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.) Processes inmates into jail facility to include fingerprinting and maintaining accurate records; escorts inmates to and from different destinations; checks the placement of inmates and their condition when necessary; supervises feeding and cleaning activities; escorts legal authorities to and from prison to talk with clients; escorts inmates to and from court; notifies the docket room personnel when necessary to report complaints from federal or county inmates; types reports on inmates who become diseased while incarcerated; prepares reports on forcible escapes and escape attempts; receives shipments of food products, paper and sanitary articles; makes periodic counts of inmates and periodic checks of all prison areas to avoid contact of outsiders with inmates and to prevent escape attempts; conducts periodic inspections of cells; transports inmates to various appointments using automobile; controls inmates through the use of physical restraint when necessary; explains and instructs inmates regarding rules and regulations of facility; communicates with family members, attorneys and other visitors to facility; recommends discipline for inmates; performs related work as required.

Important Information

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK: An employee in this class is responsible for receiving, processing, transporting and guarding inmates and includes the sanitary and general building maintenance of the facility or jail and the surrounding grounds. Work is performed within established policies, procedures and regulations under the general supervision of a Corrections Sergeant or other superior. An employee in this class may work either a rotating or permanent shift and may be required to work in excess of ten hours overtime per month. The potential for physical injury is a significant work hazard for employees in this class.

MEDICAL EXAMINATION: Eligibles selected for appointment must meet the established medical and physical standards for the class of work. The medical examination must be by one of the physicians designated by the Personnel Board. Appointees must bear the cost of the examination.

The Mobile County Personnel Department reserves the right to limit the number of applicants summoned for interview. In such instances, a preliminary appraisal of qualifications, as indicated by the completed application, will be utilized as a guide in the selection of candidates to be summoned.

A “Practice Test Seminar” is held in the Personnel Department Office, 1809 Government Street, Mobile, Alabama, at 9:00 a.m. on the third Wednesday of every month. The purpose of these seminars is to acquaint applicants or interested citizens with design format and procedures utilized by the department in its administration of written test selection devices. Inasmuch as testing facilities are limited, the seminars will be on a first come, first served basis, as long as space remains available.
