The Sustainability Team is seeking a Vice President to support strategy development, expansion and implementation of JPMC's sustainability initiatives and commitments, with a focus on the Firm's approach to its financing activities. The VP will join a team that brings industry and policy expertise, advice, and relationships to shape JPMorgan Chase's sustainability strategy and the direction of the firm's financing activities, in a way that balances the evolving expectations of our stakeholders.
The Team:
The Sustainability Team's vision is to position JPMorgan Chase as the industry leader on sustainability by building world-class expertise, financing capabilities and leadership to accelerate a global transition to a lower-carbon and more resilient future. The team is responsible for the development and implementation of JP Morgan Chase's enterprise-wide sustainability strategy, which spans the firm's financing activities and operations.
Through this work, the team has sub-teams managing several focus areas, including: 1) the development and implementation of firmwide sustainability business-related commitment and initiatives; 2) internal and external reporting and communications on ESG matters; and 3) client, investor and other stakeholder engagement; sustainability grantmaking; and issue/trend management. The team also engages with a wide range of internal partners, including those focused on operational sustainability, ESG policy and regulation, environmental and social risk management, LOB banking coverage, and sustainability marketing and communications.
Corporate Responsibility:
The Sustainability Team is part of JPMorgan Chase's Corporate Responsibility (CR) department, whose mission is to advance a stronger, more durable and safe financial system and an inclusive economy and society for clients, customers and communities around the world. In addition to Sustainability, CR includes teams focused on policy and regulatory affairs, global philanthropy, impact finance, community engagement and data analysis and research. The Sustainability Team works closely with these groups throughout CR as well as with senior executives and partners in the LOBs, Risk Management, Strategy, Legal, Investor Relations, Global Real Estate and others on a day-to-day basis.
Job Description & Responsibilities:
The VP will sit on the Strategy and Initiatives team, focused on #1 outlined above: the development and implementation of firmwide sustainability business-related commitments and initiatives. The VP will report to the Executive Director of the team, under the leadership of the Global Head of Sustainability, and lead/support on a variety of key workstreams, primarily:
- Guide the continued development of the firm's "financed emissions" net zero / Paris-alignment strategy, working with the Center for Carbon Transition and CIB Strategy on the expansion of the firm's emission intensity reduction targets to new sectors.
- Drive forward key components of the firm's 10-yr, $2.5T Sustainable Development Target - working with partners across its Green objective, engagement with the J.P. Morgan Development Finance Institution, and understanding of social components such as the firm's Racial Equity Commitment.
- Support key aspects of the firm's Sustainable Bond Issuance Program - including asset selection, impact metrics and reporting.
- Act as team lead for providing strategic advice and subject matter expertise to the lines of business on the continued development of ESG products, including firmwide efforts on ESG product inventory, controls and governance processes.
- Manage the firm's relationships with major ESG rating agencies in partnership with Investor Relations, through: a) Proactive engagement with key ESG rating agencies (e.g., MSCI, Sustainalytics), b) building deep expertise on the raters' methodologies and factors which influence JPMC's own ratings, c) regularly brief senior JPMC leadership and other internal partners on potential areas for improving our scores, to help inform business strategies.
- Build expertise across the firm's sustainability strategy and partner with other core teams on a variety of topics, including environmental and social risk management, policy and regulation, client and other stakeholder engagement, sustainable investing, operational sustainability and more.
Candidate Profile:
We are seeking a candidate with 5-8 years of professional experience and the following skills:
- Client-facing, banking, investment and/or strategy experience in corporate finance/investment banking s preferred
- Experience in or a demonstrated passion for sustainability, climate change/environmental issues, development finance and/or social enterprise work connect to capital decisions, financial products/services or JPM client needs.
- Skilled, confident, and detail-oriented communicator with an ability to articulate complex topics in a clear and concise way
- Exceptional strategic-thinking skills with an entrepreneurial spirit and comfort with ambiguity; ability to drive forward on solutions for complex and vague problems
- Outstanding project management skills, including ability to excel and maintain a positive attitude in a high-performance, fast-paced professional environment, while managing multiple projects under tight deadlines
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively and professionally in a small team and with executives, ideally with a track record of building relationships at all levels of an organization
- Comfortable engaging with senior leaders at the firm including the Operating Committee and Board
- Highly experienced and effective in using Excel and Power Point
- Outstanding judgment and independent decision-making ability
- Ability to proactively cultivate relationships with a diverse range of internal and external partners
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
