Job Summary

Under the general direction of the CEO of a large tertiary/quintenary campus organization and with the approval of the health system Senior Vice President of Acute Care Operations, serves as an executive of a large tertiary/quintenary hospital(s) with greater than $500 million in net revenue. The Facility Chief Operating Officer is an executive level role and is a member of the CEO's executive leadership team. Position handles a large portfolio of revenue centers and service lines to include support, ancillary and clinical service departments, including operating rooms, Cath labs, cancer center, rehab hospital behavioral health units, etc. Provides strategic and operational oversight in the development, implementation and monitoring of services to include budgets, operations plans, policies and procedures, new technologies, personnel matters, staff development and other management functions of the facility. Ensures all areas of the facility(s) are in compliance with all local, state, federal and joint commission regulations. Actively participates in the facility and larger campus facilities strategic planning process. Stands in for the CEO in his/her absence as needed and requested.

Accountabilities

  • Plans, directs, administers, and coordinates all activities of the assigned portfolio of clinical and operational programs, services and service lines. Works collaboratively with campus CEO, CNO, other executives, physicians and facility department leadership to help improve operational and financial performance, including improved labor productivity, cost management, revenue capture, and improved clinical, service and team member engagement outcomes measures. - 20%

  • Ensures development of administrators, associate and assistant administrators, department directors, managers and supervisors in his/her reporting structure. – 15%

  • Ensures areas or responsibility are in compliance with all applicable state, federal, joint commission and other regulatory agency requirements. - 20%

  • Develops and oversees in collaboration with facility and campus financial leadership the annual budget for assigned areas of responsibility. – 10%

  • Develops policies and procedures for the effective operation of all hospital services and initiatives corrective action if services do not meet standards. - 15%

  • Prepares presentations, reports and other information for the executive team as requested. May present information at management team meetings. - 10%

  • Assists the CEO in the development of long and short range operational and strategic plans which may include service demand analysis, resources availability analysis, productivity and cost benefit analysis of service and staff expansions. This may include oversight of implementation of the reorganization of hospital services as requested. – 10%

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

Job has direct and/or indirect supervision of team members that may include final budget authority, hire/termination authority, performance appraisal responsibility and disciplinary authority. Job will be considered a member of management staff at Prisma Health or affiliate and will have direct reports.

Minimum Requirements

  • Masters Degree - Business Administration, Healthcare Administration or a related field required. Completion of post graduate fellowship in a larger complex healthcare organization is desired.

  • 5 years - Hospital leadership experience as a COO, Associate or Assistant Administrator in a large complex tertiary facility of equivalent size and complexity is strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills or Abilities

  • Excellent relational skills and ability to get things done through teamwork, persuasion, and influence.

  • Excellent analytical skills including ability to partner with operational leaders to improve operational, financial, quality, service and employee engagement outcomes.

  • Strong understanding of healthcare dynamics and economics.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work with boards, teams, physicians and staff. Formal presentation and business writing skills. Ability to explain complex operational and financial information in ways all staff can understand and relate.

  • Basic computer skills

  • Knowledge of office equipment: fax/copier, work processing, spreadsheets, database

  • Mathematical skills
