Here are the roles you’ll play:


The Sponge


  • Interact with Construction and Design professionals to build an in-depth understanding of real-world construction methods and challenges
  • Gain familiarity with typical construction tasks, including construction services procurement, contract award and buy-out, and the creation of RFI’s, AIA industry-standard documents, and contract documents
  • Understand the contributions and responsibilities of the Development and Investments teams throughout the life of a project
  • Learn how Cortland’s philosophy, principles, and policies guide the conduct of our projects


The Go-Getter


  • Coordinate and inspect contractor work across a variety of new projects with the goal of ensuring they meet established schedule, budgetary, and quality agreements
  • Participate in and occasionally lead construction meetings, track change order requests and problem issues, and prepare and distribute project status reports
  • Research and recommend cost-saving and green initiatives
  • Contribute feedback aimed at improving the operational success of the projects, including improved safety, cost control, and environmental effectiveness
  • Lead your own projects, as assigned, and present your results to the team

  • Participate in as many formal and informal development activities, including “Lunch with the Leader” forums, as you can
  • Ask your colleagues on the Construction team, including senior executives, about our industry and the typical (and not-so-typical) career tracks at Cortland
  • Broaden your horizons by reaching out to team members in other functional areas, such as Supply Chain, Architecture/Interior Design, Marketing, Talent, IT, Facilities and Services, Investments, Operations, and Finance/Accounting

Building Blocks of Success:
  • Full-time college student, preferably enrolled in construction/building science, engineering, architecture and design, real estate, or related program of study
  • Demonstrated interest in a property management career
  • Strong communication, planning, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail; ability to prioritize multiple assignments under tight deadlines
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word
