Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under administrative direction of the Office Manager, the Communications Officer (CO) answer’s emergency phone calls, ranging in nature from missing children complaints to serious crime reports. The CO receives, categorizes and monitors calls and dispatch radio communications to the appropriate school resource and campus safety officers. The CO delivers important information to officers, such as license plate numbers, warrant statuses and background information on suspects. Other responsibilities include creating digital or written reports, lists and logs based on these calls and, in some cases, training new communications officers. This work requires objectivity, independent judgment and problem solving ability. Performs related work as directed.

This position reports to the Office Manager.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:


Receive emergency and non-emergency telephone calls from the public for police or other emergency services; determines the nature of the call and the resources necessary to respond. Monitors police radio communications; maintains contact with police units to track officer status and respond to need for additional resources; monitors various radio channels to keep abreast of county-wide District incidents and activities affecting the CCPS municipal partners and assist other county agencies with mutual aid.


Prioritizes requests for police and other public safety services; determines availability and location of SRO units; transmits information and dispatches SRO personnel and equipment in response to calls; routes calls for fire and emergency medical assistance to the Clayton County E911 Communications Center. Assists SRO personnel in the field by quickly and accurately researching and relaying criminal history information and other requested data. Communicates with callers to determine the nature of the call and provide appropriate assistance; maintains composure to ensure that complete and accurate information is transmitted to public safety and medical personnel.


Screens non-emergency calls for service; provides requested information or directs callers to the proper person, department or agency. Updates and maintains electronic records and logs of data pertaining to calls and activities. Monitors video surveillance cameras and/or alarms for the District when appropriate to identify suspicious activity. May assist with the training of new communications personnel.


All other duties as assigned to support the department.


KEY JOB REQUIREMENTS:

High School Diploma required; Associate’s Degree or higher in Public Administration, Criminal Justice or related field preferred.


5-10 years administrative services and office management experience at a level comparable to working with or for a senior-level administrator or department head.


Prior experience coordinating with all levels of Departmental Divisions; makes decisions and final recommendations that routinely affect the activities of others.


Valid Georgia driver’s license.


Individual required to establish and evaluate departmental and organizational objectives; independent judgment is required to review and approve major recommendations.


Obtain and record complete and accurate information from individuals in emergency situations, including those who are emotionally distraught, angry or difficult to understand. Understand and follow oral and written instructions Evaluate situations, identify problems, and exercise sound independent judgment within established guidelines.


Interpret and apply Federal, state and local laws, codes, ordinances, and regulations governing public safety communications. Read and interpret street maps. Effectively monitor, prioritize, and execute multiple tasks in a high stress, fluid work environment with officer and public safety at stake.


Applies, recommends and implements technology concepts to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Department. Type accurately at a speed of at least 25 net words per minute.
