Job Description

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Communications Director, the Communications Associate (Associate) will contribute to the planning and execution of an educational campaign designed to inform the most vulnerable multilingual members of their housing and civil rights.

With a specific focus on Covid-19 related Asian racism, the Associate will help facilitate grassroots outreach as a team with the Community Relations Associate and the Anti-Discrimination Victim Advocate Associate. Together, they will plan and execute virtual meetings/ clinics/ workshops as and live social media sessions and as appropriate, traditional in-person events.

The Communications Associate will focus on the creation and execution of mainstream (English) outreach methods such as flyers, email campaigns, social media, advertising and partnerships. These tools in English will be used in tandem with the multi-language translated versions created and handled by the Community Relations Associate.

As a member of the Communications team, the Associate also coordinates mainstream media relations for positive news coverage that furthers the goals of the campaign.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with the scheduling, planning and coordination of mainstream (English speaking) community outreach for the Anti-Discrimination project in partnership with the Community Relations Associate who will facilitate the in-language efforts.
  • Help produce and distribute mainstream media content such as press releases, advisories, fact sheets and electronic communication from which the multi-language translations will be based.
  • Help produce and distribute mainstream digital content (video, photo, text) for social media channels, website and email—from which the multi-language translations will be based.
  • Support the team to identify appropriate community organizations and opinion-leaders for partnerships.

Qualifications

Education and Work Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (or a combination of education and relevant work experience).
  • Minimum 1-3 years of experience in communications or directly relevant role.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong track record of managing a communications plan, including media relations, digital advocacy, branding and marketing, ideally within a social justice organization or non-profit setting.
  • Comfort in pursuing earned media (ethnic and/or mainstream) through proactive relationship building with reporters and editors.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and executing an integrated digital communications strategy across all online platforms (website, email, social media), including digital advocacy content, calls to action, petitions, letter campaigns, videos, and infographics.
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with Advancing Justice-LA’s Board of Directors, other donors, and supporters.
  • Creative and highly organized approach to work, with proven ability to meet deadlines and perform under pressure.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance independence and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a highly collaborative work environment.
  • Sincere commitment to social justice for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities

    • Proficient in PC and Mac with strong knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Analytics and Keynote.
    • Proficient in social media management systems such as Hootsuite and Sprout Social.
    • Proficient in Canva, Salsa Email Management, Meltwater Media.
  • Ability to work early mornings, evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Access to reliable means of transportation.

Working Conditions

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Occasional travel may be required.

Due to the 24/7 nature of news, this job often requires work beyond traditional business hours.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or listen. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.

This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.
