Job Title: CNC Programmer III

Exemption Status: Non-Exempt

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

The CNC Programmer III will write code to automate power driven machines that cut and finish metals, hardened steel or plastic such as lathes, grinders and mills for low quantity orders in a tool shop environment. This position will also design specialized tools or modify current tool designs.

JOB DESCRIPTION DETAILS

CNC Programming Responsibilities:

  • Create instructions for machinists
  • Review 3D CAD design blueprints.
  • Make calculations for programming including where materials should be cut.
  • Translates instructions into a computer automated manufacturing (CAM) program.
  • Communicates and collaborates closely with engineers, machinists and leadership who will use the programs.
  • Checks completed programs by running simulations or tests.
  • Prepares geometric layout of designs using proper software.
  • Determines sequence of operations in a program.
  • Chooses cutting tools that will be needed.
  • Calculates cutting feeds and speeds appropriate for the tool and material.
  • Analyzes job order and performs necessary calculations.
  • Understands and utilizes lean principles when writing or modifying programs for increasing efficiencies, reducing set-up times, etc.
  • Provides training to operators and others as needed.
  • Monitors all programs to make sure they follow blueprint instructions, ensuring the quality of the product produced and the safe execution of the task.
  • Prioritizes work to achieve targeted timelines and project completions.
  • Provides input on software and hardware needs for efficient execution of the task.
  • Provides input on machine selection for future expansions.

Tool Design Responsibilities:

  • Creates designs of tools such as broaches, milling-machine cutters, drills and related jigs, dies, fixtures, etc.
  • Examines specifications, engineering blueprints, tool orders and shop data and talks with engineers and shop personnel to resolve design problems related to material characteristics, dimensional tolerances, service requirements, manufacturing procedures and cost.

  • Attends meetings as required and/or assigned.
  • Performs other duties as required and/or assigned

Special Job Dimensions

  • Will be required to travel up to 10% of the time, domestic and international.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must have superior CNC programming skills.
  • Must have excellent CAD/CAM software skills.
  • Must have excellent reading comprehension skills.
  • Good math skills, especially algebra, trigonometry and physics.
  • Good active listening skills.
  • Must have experience in programming and machining hardened tool steel up to 60 HRC.
  • Must have good problem solving skills.
  • Must have excellent time management skills.
  • Must have good organizational and planning skills.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be mechanically inclined.
  • Knowledge of metal shop work
  • Must be highly detail oriented.
  • Must be able to work effectively with little or no supervision.
  • Must have the ability to write and read complex spreadsheets.
  • Must have the ability to read blueprints.
  • Knowledge of safety measures pertinent to each job assignment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Products. Knowledge of other programs such as SAP and CRM
  • Ability to apply algebraic and geometric formulas and standard tool engineering data to develop tool configurations.
  • Ability to draw preliminary sketches, prepare layout and detailed drawings using standard drafting tools, equipment and software.

Education, Certification/License & Work Experience

  • Associate’s Degree in a related field of study.
  • A minimum of 15 years relevant experience.
