Job Description

Job title: CNC Machine Operator A or B
Reports to: Machine Shop Supervisor
Hours: 2nd Shift Monday - Thursday; Some Overtime on Friday 2nd 3:00pm - 1:30am
**Please note: Training will be on 1st shift weekdays

Compensation: $20.00/hr +experience taken under consideration + $2.00/hr. 2nd Shift Premium

$5,000 Sign On BONUS!! (Paid out over the First Year of Employment)

Summary of responsibilities
Sets up and operates numerical control machine to cut, shape, or form metal work pieces to specifications by performing the following duties.

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Reviews setup sheet and specifications to determine setup procedure, machining sequence, and dimensions of the finished workpiece.
  • Attaches fixture to machine bed and positions and secures work piece in fixture according to setup instructions.
  • Locate fixture offsets using indicators, edge finders, or probe system.
  • Assembles cutting tools in tool holders and positions tool holders in machine spindles as specified or inserts cutting tools in specified machine magazines.
  • Loads control media such as disk, tape, or other in machine control console or enters commands to retrieve pre-programmed machine instructions from database.
  • Manipulates controls and enters commands to index cutting tool to specified set point and to start machine.
  • Observes and listens to machine operation to detect malfunctions such as worn or damaged cutting tools.
  • Changes cutting tools and location of workpiece during machining process as specified in setup instructions.
  • Measures workpiece for conformance to specifications using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, etc.
  • Notifies supervisor of discrepancies.
  • Diagnoses program or machine discrepancies and takes corrective action by making offset or other changes to numerically controlled program.
  • Adjusts machine feed and speed and changes cutters to machine parts according to specifications when automatic programming is faulty or machine malfunctions.
  • Machines materials other than metal such as composites, plastic, and rubber.
  • Maintains and records accurate count of workpieces produced and personal hourly attendance data.
  • Practices safe work habits, maintains workplace in good order, and wears all issued personal protective equipment in the workplace.

Supervisory responsibilities
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Certificates, licenses, registrations
Successful completion of approved trade-related apprenticeship program resulting in journeyman status or successful completion of a course of study at an approved technical institution resulting in a diploma or degree in machine tool operation (in such cases the course of study must be approved prior to matriculation to be applicable to this requirement). Possess a valid forklift driver’s license or is capable of obtaining one.

Education and/or experience
One year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. (Also see section titled Certificates, Licenses, Registrations.)

Language skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

Mathematical skills
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as inch/metric conversions, addition/subtraction, multiply and divide fractions and decimals. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning ability
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Physical demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand. The employee frequently is required to talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
