Job Summary

This is a temporary position that will manage covid vaccine preparation for daily vaccine clinics, maintains and reports covid vaccine inventory, maintains and places covid vaccine orders and vaccine ancillary supply orders.

Participates in Medication Utilization Evaluations (MUE), education, patient monitoring, Quality Improvement (QI) programs and drug information activities of the pharmacy. Interprets physician orders, evaluates patient profiles, makes appropriate interventions as needed, enters medication orders into the computer, compounds or prepares medication for patients as prescribed by the physician, and practices and promotes the concept of patient-focused care.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions

Demonstrates a commitment to the mission of Swedish Hospital and demonstrates a service orientation and adheres to all responsibilities and standards of the Hospital.

  • Dispenses medications and vaccines accurately following pharmacy practice act.
  • Supervises and trains personnel (i.e. pharmacy technicians, nurses, medical assistants, etc.) who will be assisting in the vaccine preparation process.
  • Ensures compliance with patient quality standards and maintains quality assurance documentation.
  • Maintains and reports accurate covid vaccine inventory.

PATIENT CARE/AGE SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Makes appropriate clinical interventions according to patient age, height, weight, sex and condition for appropriate indications and dosing.
  • Monitors drug interactions, drug allergies, ADRs and contraindications.

QUALIFICATIONS/BASIC JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of Pharmacy.

Experience/Skills

  • Person should be educated regarding IV admixture, drugs, disease states, pharmacology, and infection control and pharmacy law.
  • Needs to have excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as an ability to work all IV room equipment and train others.
  • Requires expertise in aseptic techniques and hospital pharmacy policy and procedure.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

  • Current license by the State of Illinois Department of Professional Regulation (of Education and Registration) as Registered Pharmacist.

MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

  • Supervises and trains personnel (i.e. pharmacy technicians, nurses, medical assistants, etc.) who will be assisting in the vaccine preparation process.

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONTACT

  • Internal - Pharmacists, Technicians, Physicians, Nursing, Transportation and Patients.
  • External - Pharmaceutical Sales Representatives and other pharmacies.

ENVIRONMENT

  • Spends a majority of work time sitting (70%), with some standing and walking (30%) around the hospital.
  • Includes some moving or lifting of objects (up to 30 lbs.) on a regular basis (0.5%), especially bins of checked IV admixtures.
  • Includes about 80% of time spent preparing covid vaccine doses and 20% of time spent using a computer keyboard and communicating with other health care professionals regarding physician's orders and prescriptions.
  • Exposed to possible injury from chemicals, needles, or equipment (80%).
  • Exposure to airborne germs when doing renal dosing or patient counseling on the floor (5%).
  • Other environmental conditions might include eyestrain and exposure to other computer side effects, such as radiation and high-pitched noise. Also, exposed to constant noise from printers and phones, etc. about 20% of the time.

Computer system access is assigned based on manager access level request and on the minimum necessary as described in this job described in this job description. Approval for level of access is given by the system administrator or manager of the department that has ownership of system/module. Computer access includes Name, Demographic, and Clinical.
