Patient Population:
GI, Surgical Oncology, Plastics, and Ears Nose & Throat

Shift Information:

  • Full-time, 36 hours per week
  • 3 (12-hour shifts) from 7:00 PM - 7:30 AM

General Care Information

The Specialty Surgery 12E is a multifaceted unit and is a great introduction to the care of a variety of post-surgical patients at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Our nurses provide care to extremely complex surgical patients that have often undergone life-altering surgery. Clinical nurses on the Specialty Surgery 12E floor gain incredible experience and knowledge in a number of devices & procedures including ileostomies & colostomies, artificial airways including tracheostomies & T-tubes, negative pressure wound therapy, chest tubes, venous dopplers, and leech therapy. This unit allows for nurses to advance their skillset by combining cutting-edge technology and critical thinking skills to provide evidence-based comprehensive nursing care to our highly complex patient population.

Specialty surgeries include:

  • Tumor Removals
  • Ostomy Placements
  • Weight Loss Procedures
  • Reconstructive Flaps
  • Gender Affirming Surgeries

In addition, the unit offers an environment that supports teamwork and collaboration from all members of the interdisciplinary team. On Specialty Surgery 12E floor, nurses have the opportunity and are encouraged to get involved in departmental quality committees and contribute to advancements in our evidence-based nursing care by participating in our LEAD (Lead, Excel and Develop) program. We provide opportunities for professional growth and development and encourage lifelong learning to continue career advancement in the nursing field.

The Clinical Nurse reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

The role of the professional clinical nurse is unique and essential to the care of the patient. The nurse demonstrates that unique and essential function through the framework for nursing practice.

Responsibilities:

Advocate:

  • Practices in accordance with the patient centered care model.
  • Develops an individualized age-specific culturally sensitive nursing plan of care for the patient that is based on the nursing process.
  • Incorporates the role of patient advocate into the plan of care.
  • Uses a team approach to develop and achieve daily patient-centered individualized care goals.
  • Acknowledges and values the contributions of the patients significant others as an integral part of the plan of care.
  • Identifies potential conflict situations and facilitates resolution using established communication channels.

  • Advances clinical expertise, as demonstrated through pursuit of informal and formal continuing education opportunities and obtaining specialty certification when eligible.

Qualifications


Required:

  • Graduate of an NLN accredited school/college of nursing .
  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing or higher.
  • Current State of Illinois, Registered Professional Nurse license.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR through American Heart Association.
  • Analytic ability (conceptual and quantitative).
  • Oral, listening and written communication skills.
  • Strong human relation skills to interact effectively and collaborate with others in difficult situations.
  • Use of a keyboard to enter or retrieve data.

Preferred:

  • Experience in specific clinical area.
  • Nursing specialty certification, if eligible.
